Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Easiest way to perform date subtraction

    I have a field called hire_date and it is a date field. I want the system date to subtract the hire date and see if it is equal to or greater than 25 years. I can't find a simple way to do this in the help files.

    Look up the AGE() function in the help file.

    Code:
    ?age({10/08/84})

    =25

    hire_date={10/08/84}
    ?age(hire_date)
    = 25

      Tom,

      As you can see from my previos posts that I am not very strong with the yet. I looked up the age field but don't understand what it wants me to do. I looked at your code and I'm also lost. Here is what I have. One Date field named "Date_Of_Hire" what I want to do is have "Date()" subtract the "Date_Of_Hire" and see if it is greater than or equal to 25 years. You lost me with the 10/08/84 in there.

        I suggest you look up "age()" in the Help system as it gives a very good explanation.

          Garry,

          Here is what I did. Calculated field Years_Worked = AGE( Hire_Date,date())

          It keeps returning a T if I don't enter anything in the Date_Hired field and a F if I enter something in the Date_Hired field. What am I missing (besides the boat)?

            I just don't understand why it is returning a logic answer. My numeric field is 2 in length.

              Scott,
              You are clearly doing something wrong, because this is as straight forward as it gets. The setup should be this:
              1) hire_date field date type
              2) age field numeric type set to field rule: calculated: expression as: age(hire_date,date())

              That's it.

                Re: Easiest way to perform date subtraction

                If you have placed this
                Code:
                Years_Worked = AGE( Hire_Date,date())
                in the expression for your calculated field then you haven't missed the boat, you are comparing one boat to another. :) You are asking if Years_Worked is equal to AGE( Hire_Date,date()). Which results in a yes or no.

                Since you want to assign the value of AGE( Hire_Date,date()) to a field which I assume is Years_Worked you just need to use
                Code:
                AGE( Hire_Date,date())
                asthe expression.

                  I have this, but any hire_date before the year 2000 comes out with a little square box. Anything 2000 and over hire_date comes out ok. Why no correct calculation before the year 2000?

                    Peter,
                    Sounds like "Years worked" field on your form not set up in line with the underlying table structure.
                    Easiest solution is delete the field from the form and put it back again by dragging it from the toolbox.

                      Gary,

                      Thank you. I don't know why it did this. I did what you said, Deleted it and dragged it back on and it works perfectly.

                      Thanks again.

                        Hi Scott,

                        While deleting, and dragging the field on again fixed the little square problem, I think you should understand for the future and anyone else reading this thread why you got the the little box instead of a number.

                        Very simply, when you placed the field on the layout you only allowed the length to display of 1 (T or F). The calculated field now needed to display 2 numbers but couldn't, so it showed the little box.

                        You can test this for yourself, open the Invoice in AlphaSports in design mode, change the Invoice Total Display Format from 10 to 2 save and view.
