Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Duplicate Chid Record ???

    Hi Guys,

    I need some help with this please.

    I need to create a new Child record, using all the data from the selected child.

    The purpose is to enable the user not to have to re-type all the details just to make a couple of small updates.

    As you see, as there are so many fields in the child table, I could not use a browse, my idea is to use a Sub Form instead.

    I also need to have the new child record incremented with the next sufix number. See code.

    I have tried several ways to do this. Odd buttons on the form shows my line of thinking.

    All suggestions welcome.

    Re: Duplicate Chid Record ???

    Keith, I haven't looked at your zip, but an easy way to do this is to use a button to run a script that displays an xdialog, prepopulated with "field" values the user can change. The Save button on the xdialog runs a script that enters the new record.

    I'm not crazy about sub-forms. If you prefer not to use an xdialog, I'd recommend opening a new form, in dialog mode. The new form would be based only on the child table. Pass field values to the called form when it opens.

      another way would be to have a button that copies the fields in the form you wish and then populate the new record on open using the variables you set to fill the form fields:

      parentform:mprice2.value = var->

      I typically use a field rule in the child table to increment(always setting the field back to one). There are better ways andI will change that as soon as i take the time.

        As I have so many fields to work with, it has been suggested that I use
        .RECORD_DATA_GET() and .RECORD_DATA_SET()
        Has anyone got experience with these functions and how best can I use them in my application?

          Keith,

          You are duplicating your record just fine from what i can see with the script on the bottom left of the four. The increment seems to have a problem. I have chased it around a bit and it seems you have a script run from field rules that confuses anything i want to do so far. It would have been easier for me if the suff had been numeric. Maybe because all my fields of that type are numeric.

          I will try to spend more time with it too(maybe at home tonight).

            Keith, Dave.

            I don't have much time yet tonight but here are a couple of things to help(?) fix the issue.

            By adding to the scripts on the two most upper right buttons (script and copy Style 2) the following you can see that the table that is being referred to in both scripts are incorrect--both refer to the style_no table.

            add this after the pointers have been set.
            For the Script button
            Code:
            nm=t.name_get()
            msgbox(nm)
            For the copy Style 2 button
            Code:
            nm2 = tbl.name_get()
            msgbox(nm2)
            So the blob is only being set to the one record that is in the style_no table....am sure that this was not the intention. Which also brings up the question as to exactly what fields are wanted to duplicate and what is the ID field (the style no?)??
            Mike

              Keith,

              I apologize for not having worked on your app tonight and now it is too late. I had a girlfriend show up and another one on the phone all night. It will be difficult the next couple days.

              Mike, it appears the style_no table is being used kind of like a header for the other one. I would believe the 3rd table should be connected to the main table due to a one to one connection, but that could work either way.

              I reversed the sets a little bit and put the style_no field second and the new form worked well to dupe. The only problem I had was the time to work out the suff field. The suff field is character instead of numeric so takes some conversion. I ran out of time. It would have been simpler had the two fields been numeric(at least to me).

              I don't usually tackle these kind but Keith has helped me a few times too.
