Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Script not working in latest builds

    Hi All,

    Can anyone please help me with a new script?

    In a typical 'Parent > 1 to Many Child' situation form with child browse. I have navigation Next and Previous buttons that fetch through the parent and and keeps the initial focus on the last x number of rows showing in the browse so the user is initially focused on the last x number of child rows.

    See my attached 'Tester2.zip' sample it runs as expected in all earlier builds and earlier Alpha versions.

    This has worked as expected OK in my apps for years in all versions of Alpha until the latest builds of V9 and V10.

    Have reported but been told this is not a bug but the new browse behaviour has changed. (I would have thought that this is a very common method needed for a form)

    I have spent hours trying to write a new script that works with the latest Alpha builds, can anyone help?

    Michael

    Michael, I took a look and see the behavior differences in the browse object. I've never bumped into this before and don't recall anyone else asking about what you are doing. As you know you are trying to limit the range of rows that are displayed in the browse so that only the "bottom" 5 are displayed, with previous rows having been "scrolled off" the top of the browse object, so to speak. This may be a common requirement but I've never seen it before. In similar cases I've met the client's need to see the most recent transactions by simply sorting the rows in descending order, so that the most recent row is on top. Oldest on the bottom. That of course is a very different thing that you are trying to do. Will give it some more thought.

    Later on ...

    Sorry, Michael. Don't see a way to achieve exactly the same effect. It would be possible to "filter" the records to only show the last 5, but then the previous records would be excluded from display until the user released the filter. Not the same, but might be useful to you if the use of a descending sort sequence is less preferable.

      Tom,

      Thanks for looking at my post. You will see that my script runs as expected in all previous versions of Alpha (including the beta v10). Selwyn has informed me that now the browse objects behaviour is different.

      Yes, my users have always been able to focus on the last 12 records without having to scroll up each time and this has worked fine for me in the past. It would be to much of a wrench to change this for all the existing users.

      Be grateful if your expetise could come up with an answer,

      Many Thanks,

      Michael.

        The filter route is not what I need, the user must be allowed to scroll back up.

        Also the reverse order doesn't fit my needs since when adding a new record logically it needs to show at the bottom row as would a new invoice item on the Alphasports invoice form.

          Tom,

          Problem solved - couldn't be simpler. Size the heighth of the browse to fit 'x' number of records and then simple code:

          browse1.fetch_last()
          browse1.activate()

          (spent hours figuring this one out :S)

            Michael, that's good news. I tried altering the size of the browse, also, but continued to fetch_prev() rows... didn't work. Glad you got it solved. -- tom

              Michael, version 10 seems to have a new method that would also provide a solution for you. From the "What's new in Version 10" I quote:

              New Browse Methods
              You can now scroll the row with focus to a particular position within the browse window using the new .Scroll_Current_Row() method.

              Syntax:

              actualRowSet = <browse>.Scroll_Current_Row as n (row as n)

              Example

              Open the Invoice form in Alphasports. Set focus to the 4th row in the Invoice Items browse. Then, from the Interactive window, type:

              ? Invoice:browse1.Scroll_Current_Row(1)
              1

              The records in the Browse are scrolled and the row with focus (the 4th row), now becomes the 1st row in the Browse window

                Re: Script not working in latest builds

                Tom,

                Thanks, I think the new browse method would have been OK for my situation since my old scripts are ancient V4.5 days always gave me a row number.

                In practise my browses are on tabbed forms and the height allows for 12 rows/records so if there are more than 12 child records focus is always on the last 12 when fetching through the parent form and the user can scroll up if need be. Also the user has a button to add new records and focus still remains on the last record of 12 regardless of the number of records added. So the simple 'browse1.fetch_last()' works beautifully in V10.

                (Just received an email from Selwyn to say the new method is now in the latest V10 build, how is that for service)

                Thanks again
