Prompt for a date variable problem

I can't believe I am stymied by this one. I am using the "Prompt For a Date" action script genie to store a date into a variable "vprompt_date". I understand that it is a character variable.
This happens in the "MM" or "main Menu" form.

I then load a form:

The onInit event of this form has the following code:
vdate=ctod("var->vprompt_date")

f = Form.load("reconcile","dialog")

f:TABLES:xactions.filter_expression = "Date = {"+vprompt_date+"}"

The form loads with an embedded browse that displays records that fit the date criteria.

The browse has several columns that I would like to have totaled Spreadsheet style. To that end I have created several calculated fields that I have lined up under the browse columns.

The expression in one of these fields is:
dbsum("xactions","date","vdate","visa")
Where "vdate" is a variable associated with the form.

My problem is that vdate fails to take on the value of vprompt_date.

vdate takes on the value of the current date which gives me the wrong total. I have an instance of the vdate variable on my form "reconcile" and when I change the date value to the correct date I get the correct sums on the bottom of the embedded browse.

I believe you want

dbsum("xactions","date",vdate,"visa")

no quotes.

"vdate" - evaluates to the name of the variable

The string you sent me is what I am currently using and it works fine. The big problem is that the following code fails to transfer a date picked by the "prompt for Date" action script to vdate!
I can't seem to get it to do it.

The onInit event of the "reconcile" form has the following code:

Have you set the scope of the variable to make sure it can be seen by the form?

The action script variable vprompt_date should be declared as shared or global.

I set the scope to both global and shared and vdate still wouldn't take the string from vprompt_date.
I was following the code in the debugger and I noticed that the system fails to transfer and values into vdate. Is there something wrong with the syntax?

?vdate

when you put quotes around it like this: 

dim vdate as d
dim vprompt_date as c = "10\11\2009"
dim daysto as n
vdate = ctod("var->vprompt_date")

?vdate
= {  /  /    }

Didn't work. I even included the "var->" in front of the vdate. This is such a fundamental operation. That I can't believe it won't work.

This would be the code if you have all the rest set correctly

vdate = ctod(var->vprompt_date)

Where are you exactly using it? do you have the var->vdate properly declared and is it on your form? Are you refreshing your form?

There are two forms involved. The first is called "MM" and I call up the "prompt for date" action script item. A calendar pops up and the user selects a date. The date is stored as a character string in "vprompt_date".
A form called "reconcile" is called up next using form.load which includes a filter that uses "vprompt_date as a parameter.
The oninit event of the "reconcile" form is supposed to load a shared variable called "vdate" with the value held in "vprompt_date.

A calculated field sums a column of numbers associated with the filtered rows. The expression is:
dbsum("xactions","date",vdate,"visa")
Sadly, "vdate" fails to accept the "vprompt_date" value.

Have been watching this thread and have been a little confused as to what you want to do.

I have attached a zip file that contains a dummy table and two forms named after the forms in your last post.

Open Form MM and press the reconcile button and select a date from the popup calendar , it will then open the reconcile form as a dialog and will pass the date to vdate in that form - it will show as the variable vdate.

Again I don't know if this is what you want -

If it is not then it would be a help if you could post a stripped down version of the tables and form so we could see what is happening and maybe solve your problem.

I found the problem but I don't know how it happened.
In the oninit event in the "reconcile " form I used action script to generate this code.

'Set the value of one or more variables.
DIM vdate AS D
var->vdate = ctod(var->vprompt_date)

I commented out the DIM statement and it worked. Not I am not certain about where the DIM statement is to occur.
