Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    passive link and posting

I have brought in a few tables needed from Quickbooks(passive link), now I can work with data from those tables, but lets say I want to access this data the way alphasports does the invoice set. Each table within the set needs its data for the set to work. But I have most of the set data coming from one QB table. So should I create extra tables and post the info into them from the QB table. In order to get the various tables needed to create the set. I noticed that I cannot seem to create multiple links to the same table with in the same set. What is the best way around this?

    Re: passive link and posting

Lets say I create two tables one passive link table to QB contacts and one contact table from Alpha templates (field names are different). I want all the data from QB_contacts posted into Alpha_contacts. There are no records in Alpha_contacts yet. Once the records are in the Alpha_contacts I will want the QB_contact passive link table to update the alpha_contact table. What is the fastest method for this type of operation. Of course I am trying to simplify what I am really trying to do with a couple of QB passive tables.

I really don't understand what you are trying to do...

But from the general flavor of your question, I use some of these methods.

      1. a set - can be a 1-1 or a 1-many relationship
      2. a mapped table - only a 1-1, but other Alpha functions think of it as one table. So you can do things that a set can't do.
      3. a posting operation. This will put data from one table into another, but won't add records to the table.
      4. an append operation. Will add records from one table to another.
      5. a copy of a set to a table. (also see join operation)
      6. other variations of a join operation - subtract...

Re-reading your question a few times, you may need to look at an append operation with the update existing and add unique option...

        Al

you come to the rescue again, what I have run into is the fact that Alpha sets cannot be used the way I am trying to go about things. It may be my way of thinking is getting in the way of my forward progress. Having come over from another (FM), my brain is stuck in a thought process from the past. I believe mapping maybe the answer for some of my issues. I will give this new thought a work out.

        Thanks for all your help

I was having a similar problem and the mapped table worked perfectly for the solution. Thank you

            Re: passive link and posting

Can anyone tell me why when I try to create a mapped table this error message pops up: Error loading :\grei database\mastertble.dbf: Field is not recognized. This table was working just fine this morning but then I realized that I needed to change which table I used for the parent and which table I used for the child for my mapped table to display the correct information. So as soon as I changed it this error message popped up so I tried to create a brand new mapped table and the error message still popped up. I have tried restoring my database from a previous back up that I knew worked correctly but everytime I try to change something the same error message pops up. I am stuck and any help would be much appreciated.
            Thanks,
            Cassie
