Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Network Performance

    Good day for All.

I have created a Project Listing and the Project Setup Form using the V9. There is no problem using my own my notebook to save, update and delete the record. It is very fast (the database is stored at my own notebook).

I have shared the data from my PC. In the Network PC, I have installed the V9 Run-Engine and also activate the Shadow Database. But when user access the PC, he want to save, update and delete the record, it is very slow. The PC has 1GB and Pentium 4 2.50.

My script of the Form using Action Script to do it; Does it means using Action Script will slow down the performance? What I can do to improve the Performance? Now only 2 person using the database, my staff and I connect the database at the same time and it is very slow already. What will be happened that my client has 30 users and connect at the same time? What will happen?

    Please help...
    Many Thanks.

    Re: Network Performance

    Jack,

The shadow on the networked PC is just a copy of the forms reports, sets, etc. The actual data is still on your laptop. When the network user updates and saves records, it goes to your laptop to do that. I am not really sure that a laptop as a server is a real viable solution. We use dedicated servers for our data. We have over 200 users connected. Your test run is not exactly representative of what a server-based network system is like.

      Re: Network Performance

Jack, suggest you search for and review similar message threads. There are many many factors that affect performance over a local area network. This has been discussed many times.

I can't resist pointing you to Dr. Wayne's article: "Simplify your Application for Better Performance" at www.learn alpha.com. The complexity of your data entry set / form is only one of many things that might slow down a networked application. But it's a good beginning point.

When working on an application that is targeted for multi-user access over a local network every design decision should be made with an eye towards minimizing network overhead. The fewer packets of data that have to be moved to and from the server the faster the app will run.

        Re: Network Performance

You also didn't say what type of network you have.

It took awhile to convince some of them but I finally got all my customers to switch to a wired network. For one I had to actually hand carry some cables into his office and hook them up across the floor. It took about 30 seconds for the users to start screaming for him to wire everyone. People seem to have a hard time grasping the fact that things like Excel and Word don't really "use" the internet much - only when saving or retrieving a document - whereas a database uses the network constantly.

If you have a newer gigabit network you might be OK but the older 100 meg networks will usually be slower than a wired network.

Disclaimer: Some 100 meg systems may work fine with wireless but I haven't found one yet.

          Re: Network Performance

          Continuing...

The presence of active anti-virus systems that scan disk and network activity will also slow things down significantly. The recommended solution is to exclude the database folder from A/V scanning, so that disk reads and writes are NOT being continuously scanned by your A/V software.

            Re: Network Performance

            sir jack,

try using v8 even you have a good/bad table design and complex sets
you will see the speed difference of v8 against v9 and even if you have a antivirus on your laptop
            i'm sure on that!

for your concerns about the error you see in v9 pls click here
            http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=82344

look for sir steve wood reply and then register to alphatogo.com and submit the error you see. your immediate feedback is needed to have us a guaranteed satisfaction in v9.

"Push yourself on v8. Only if v9/v10 can't motivate you."

            Thank you.
