Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Embedded Browse OnRowChange Issue

    I have an embedded browse in which the only editable field is a logical one formatted as a checkbox. I have code in the OnRowChange event that is supposed to add a record to another table if the field is checked. The code is presented below. The issue i have is an intermittent one in that the field has to be clicked more than once in order for the value to change. At other times it 'seems' to have changed without showing me the checkbox in the field. I am currently downloading and installing a patch again to rule rule out any browse-related bugs, or is it my code? :-)

    I am using version 9, Build 2095 and system addin Build 3264.

    Help is urgently needed.

    DIM t AS P
    DIM indx AS P
    DIM rec AS N
    DIM the_key AS A
    t ="registration.dbf",FILE_RW_SHARED)
    indx = t.index_primary_put("Season_Id")
    if (topparent:browse1:registered.value = .t.) then
    the_key = topparent:browse1:player_id.value+str(parentform:vseasonstart.value)
    rec = t.fetch_find(the_key)
    if rec > 0 then
    ui_msg_box("Registration Error!", "The player you wish to register is already registered")
    t.Entityid = topparent:browse1:player_id.value
    t.Entitytype = "Player"
    t.Seasonstart = parentform:vseasonstart.value
    end if
    end if

    Re: Embedded Browse OnRowChange Issue

    The OnRowChange event fires when you change rows, not when you edit a field value. You might want to use the OnChange event, or more simply, use a button on your form.

      Re: Embedded Browse OnRowChange Issue

      Hi Tom,

      Ok, I misunderstood. I interpreted RowChange to mean a field value in the row was changed.

      Is OnChange an undocumented event for Alpha's Embedded Browse object? Because i don't see it in the event list. Additionally, how would i use a button to test for a a field value change in an embedded browse?

      Forgive me, i'm still learning Xbasic and Alpha for that matter but i aim to be a certified developer using this product.

        Re: Embedded Browse OnRowChange Issue

        One way to find the help, using vers 9, is to specify "web help" as the data source for the help information, then open Help, choose Index tab, search for OnRowChange. This will take you to a page discussing "Object Events". Scroll down to find the "Browse Events". OnChange is discussed there.

        In referring to a button I was thinking of using the button to change the field (cell) value, and run your script. i.e. no longer permitting the user to change the field (cell) value manually.

          Re: Embedded Browse OnRowChange Issue

          Ok Tom. I understand the OnChange event and its use. My problem is this. How can i use it when i can't access it? When i press F11 to bring up the events for the embedded browse, the only available events are the following:

          Events - ???

          And what event is Events as indicated by the question marks in the list above?

            Admittedly this is a bit obscure, but check the "what's new in vers 8" documentation, for changes made there in the "Browse Improvements". The "events" event permits you to define your own OnChange function.

              Re: Embedded Browse OnRowChange Issue

              First, which style checkbox are you using? I encountered a bug in A5 sometime ago with the 'Default' checkbox style (and only the Default sstyle) whereby the checkbox was improperly displayed as being checked when in fact it wasn't - which caused quite a bit of confusion. I sent in a bug report to A5 and got a special patch to fix it that as far as I know hasn't been yet been released to the general public.

              Second, do you want the new record to be created immediatelyand always upon the checkbox field change, or only upon the event of saving the change. I ask the question because what do you intend to do should the checkbox be erroneously checked and the new record created?

              On the assumption you would only want the new record to be created upon the act of actually committing the checkbox change, i.e. saving the changed browse record, then I'm thinking a better place for your code would be as an 'Onsave' event, conditioned upon the value of the checkbox logical?
