Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How do you do this? Comments needed.

I have been asked to create a report using 2 data files. One is Blackberry charges data file and the other is a Regular tel data file. These two files all have an account numbers and that will be my parent and child key.

The problem is that not everyone has blackberry but the regular telephone file has every one. In other words a person can appear in both files but not appear in the blackberry file.

I created a set file but I dont know how to set the link type to. Should it be one to many or one to one.

I also want to create a report listing each charge in each account. I dont know how to group it for it to show the total of the blackberry charge per peron and the total of the regular phone charge per person in each account.

    Any comment will help.

    Thanks

Seems like you need a parent table of all account numbers. then both the other tables would link to this parent one to many. You could then use sub reports, one for each of the child tables.

The parent table could be created by copying all account numbers from the regular table to a new table.
    There can be only one.

One more thing. Can I use an existing report layout as sub report? I am willing to change the field links and formula to the new set. I have a report on the blackberry data but do not want to recreate the report again in the sub report.

        Thanks

          Indirectly.

Once you have the set constructed, select your existing reports, one at a time in the control panel and right click and choose Copy To..., specifying the set as the destination.

Start building the report on the set. Place a subreport in the detail section. Double click on it to open it in design mode. From the Report menu choose Import, choose Report.

You can then specify any report built on the set (really only using fields from one of the tables as you designed them originally).

Thinking further it seems a bit strange that you are not able to select reports built on the child tables to import into the subreports. Subreports are, after all, designed to do just that.

            Stan,

How can I suppress the blanks in the database. The report is done but what is happening at the moment is that the system create blanks when the costctr is not in the other table vice versa, thus creating a huge printout. I will like to suppress the blanks on either side of the 2 tables.

            Thanks

When properly constructed, sub reports do not lead to blank lines. That is one of their benefits.

Everything worked fine on the thread. I have another problem, I am trying to import a report into a subreport instead of recreating the report over again, the import hangs and nothing happens. The report and subreport will be based on the same table.

I read somewhere here it cannot be done if its based on the same table, is that true.

                Thanks

I just tried that in V8 and it works ok on the AlphaSports vendor report.

I have decided to recreate the report. No biggie.

But I also want to know this, say I have 2 subreports -- summary and detail, on the main report, I want the system to run the summary first and then the detail based on the account number which I set on the main report how would one do that? At the moment, its running the whole summary and then the whole detail right after. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

                    Thanks

The subreport can have its own selection of records. I've never tried it but you could change the detail subreport filter to something like

                      SCANNING("vendor") .and vendor_id = some_variable_set_elsewhere
