Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Right Click Menu

Thanks for takeing time to post the link Steve. :)

I tried the right click on the form in view mode Steve and unchecked Allow Edits.

Yes I can now see my custom menu if I right click a character field (its not active till I edit the record though) but how am I going to edit the record then use the save record or cancel change that I have placed in my custom right click if I cannot edit the fields in the first place because I have unchecked Allow Edits?

    See Image>

I am getting myself confused here.

Why cant I just customise the default right click menu on a character field like I can with other fields with Allow Edits checked?

      Re: Right Click Menu

Well you gotta watch out for those Development guys over at Alpha. It's not that they are never wrong, but they most often do things for a reason, especially when they do something deliberate. And then, if you don't like the way they did something and "report it" as a bug or general complaint, they go off and modify the program so it does exactly what you want:). Just for you.

Then you are hooked and never find yourself suggesting things like you will return to MS Access. Because you know over at Access, although it might have this or that feature not found in Alpha Five, you know you will suffer in isolation with only your fellow peers to talk to and absolutely no communication with MS on anything that is important or immediate for you.

        Steady on Steve,
You'll give yourself a big head ache fellow. Will someone give this guy a chill pill.

I'm am a learner in Database stuff. Iam asking for help on using software that I have required less than a week ago. Two weeks before that I bought Access 2007. If you are refering I said I was going back to access and what ever. read the post again on patch v9. I was trying to praise the Alpha product.

Should I have stayed with the Access 2007 Product that I also bought 2 weeks ago? Maybe not Alpha looks and feels better for my needs.

I think you will like Alpha Five. It's not as well documented as Access but others have said it is easier than Access to get started. The members of this message board are also very helpful when you run in to a bind.

            Re: Right Click Menu

Add two more menus for the right click. Name both using the same name as your current right ckick menu but one with '_View' at the end of the name and the other with '_Edit'

The actual menu definitions can be different if you want/need them to be

Kind words Steve, thank you for your help.

Thankyou Tim, your a star. :) That got it working with my "Save Record" + "Cancel Changes" custom.

I tried leaving the custom menu blank by deleting all actions but got the message in the image below. I converted to new menu but got error menus on right click.

Hey what the heck, it will do fine with the custom menu I got now.

Thanks TIm and Steve for carrying this forward.

                Tim,
I have had 3 separate menus from the beginning when testing this, but could not get them to work as stated....I will try again later.

                  Re: Right Click Menu

Got back to this....You were right of course Steve---I jumped the gun saying it was a bug. :o

But for sure the help and the help(ful) text in the form that describes this needs to let users know that ALL three custom right click menus have to be created for this to work properly....the text states "In addition" and "you can" which does not lead me to conclude that they "must" be created.

Like most things, now that I know, it is not an issue.

Don't want to create any v9/v10 controversy, but just a point of information:

I thought I'd report this as a v10 'issue.' whilst I was reporting other v10 bugs. As a result, this has been sorted in the latest release of v10. Selecting <none> now means NONE!!
                    Kind Regards

                      Thanks for the info.

Had an email from Selwyn Rabins myself.
"this is fixed. the fix will be available in the next v10 update."

Pity. Time to move on to the next task.
