Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculated Field Percentage

I have a field in a table for payroll commission which I'm trying to make a percentage. When I enter numeric as the field type, it will not let me place 2 decimals in order to use in a calculated field on the form.

For instance: commission is 20%, but I want to format so that it has a decimal (.20). This field will be multiplied by invoice total.

If I leave it as a regular numeric, the calculation will be incorrect because a percentage is calculated with 2 decimal places....

How can I format this field so that it can be properly used in the calculation. (Invoice total * commission rate)

    Thanks.

    Re: Calculated Field Percentage

You need one field to hold the real value (.20) or to hold the value to display in the percentage (20). Either one can be calculated from the other.

You can then choose which one to use in the calculation

    (Invoice total * commission rate)

Ex: Real field holds .20, calculated field = real field * 100. Calculated field is placed on the form and formatted as percentage. Real field is used in commission computation.
    There can be only one.

      Re: Calculated Field Percentage

Check the definition of the numeric field in the structure of the table. Have you specified the necessary number of decimal places? Instead of storing "20" in the field, store "0.20". Note that this will require a field width of 4, since you have to include a space for the decimal itself.

        Re: Calculated Field Percentage

Ok, I went in and changed commission field to numeric width of 4 with 2 decimal places. When I type 0.20 into the field and move to another field, it only shows me a 0. When I type in 20, it tells me that my number is too large...

        What am I doing wrong?

Ok...what about using this calculated field?

Invoice total * Commission rate (field kept with no decimal)/100

That seemed to produce the correct result. Will this cause any problems for me?

Check the properties of the field on the form. Go to the Format tab and see how many decimal places you specified.

That will do it as well. I try to always make the expression explicit using parentheses to force the order of evaluation - even if just for clarity.

                  Re: Calculated Field Percentage

Kristie, after you change the table structure, you must then set the display properties correctly in the form layout. As Steve suggests, right click the field (after putting the form in design mode) and increase the format width appropriately. You can't enter 20 because that would take 5 places:

                  Code:
                  20.00

The display has been the problem for two issues today....had no idea it was so important. I guess trying to learn everything at once has made me look over what seems to be small issues..Thanks for your help
