Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Database Design The Basics - Still Learning

    Lookups
I have searched the threads on here but cannot find the answer. I see a lot of reference to lookups where one field is selected and other values are placed in other fields as a result.

I want something more simple, rather than a simple 'list' embedded in a form I want to use an external database to provide the list (so the values can be user amended) - the external DB is just a one field list. I want a popup box or similar when I enter the field to list the values and one can be selected. How do I go about this, I just cannot seem to get the syntax right in rules/field lookup.

    Calculations
In a calculated field, a date, for record creation and updated fields.

Created Date - I am using date(), but what function to achieve this - if the date field is empty (ctod("")) then date() else nochange.

Update Date - How do I test if an actual update has taken place rather than someone just entering a record and making no changes?

i.e. if no changes made then leave the date in the updated field as it is else a change has been made so change the date to today.

    Hello Paul,

    For the lookup:
Create a new one filed table, inside your application/database. There are a few ways to have a user add data to the one field table. If you like, you can make a simple form to input data into the table, edit it, etc.

Now go to field rules for the other field in the table you want the lookup for.
See the attached JPG. It is the Lookup tab in field rules for the field you want the lookup for. At the first dropdown select "table lookup".
There are variouse options on this tab. You can use your own designed form, or use a Alpha default form to Enter, Edit, Etc. data in your new lookup table.

Let the board know if this get you off to a good start for the lookup table.

    Regards

    Ed

      Hi Paul

For the record creation and update fields, suggest you consider following Cal Locklin's excellent advice in post No 5 of this thread.
      Kind Regards

Thanks Ed, I was nearly there, but was missing out the source/fill fields in the definition. Blindingly obvious now :-(

            Hey Paul,

If it wasn't for this excellent Message Board(with the generous time and excellent knowledge of various persons), I would have not gotten any where myself, over the last few years.

For myself, I sure do a lot of reading of different posts.....

            Have a good one..

            Regards

            Ed
