Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Child Total in Header Table?

    I know this has been asked before but I cant find it. (I have searched, honest).

    Using AlphaSports as example, how do I store the Total of the (Child_Table)Invoice_Items Extention in the (Parent_Table) Invoice_Header?

    Hi Keith,

    Put a calculated field in the header table and use Dbsum() or Tablesum(). However every time you do something to the child table you need to recalc the header table in some way to reflect your changes.

      Hi Lance,

      Thanks for that.

      How would you trigger the recalc?

        Why not add a posting rule in the field rules for the child table - that way any changes in the child table should be instantly reflected in the parent record.

          Hello Keith,

          I have a similar situation and solved that by creating a time field in the header table. When saving the child record I set the field value of that field to NOW(). This results in a time stamp and triggers the recalc.

          Hope this helps.

            I'd use Bob's suggestion.... a posting field rule from the child to the parent that adds the value from the child to the parent.

            You might also have an update operation to zero out the parent field and a posting operation to reset the values. That would help with existing data and when you think something is out of synch, this would reset all of the values.

            Lance's suggestion will work, but requires reading all of the child records whenever the parent needs updating.

              Re: Child Total in Header Table?

              I've used posting, and long ago decided to replace it with my own method. I also find it very helpful to store the invoice total in the header record.

              I have an OnSaveRecord event in the child table, sketched out below:

              Writing here directly to the message board, not out of the Xbasic editor, and a bit generic but you'll get the idea.

              Code:
              ' Get current key:
              t = table.current()
              key = t.Invoice_ID

              ' Recalc total:
              tDet = table.open("invoice_detail")
              tDet.index_primary_put("invoice_id")
              balance = 0
              while tDet.invoice_id = key .and. .not. tDet.fetch_eof()
                 balance = balance + tDet.debit - tDet.credit
                 tDet.fetch_next()
              end while

              ' Get Hdr record to update
              tHdr = table.open("invoice_hdr")
              tHdr.index_primary_put("invoice_id")
              tHdr.fetch_find(key)
              tHdr.change_begin()
                 tHdr.invoice_total = balance
              tHdr.change_end(.t.)

              tDet.close()
              tHdr.close()
              end
              Some may criticize this as overkill and a lot of processing. But I've found it to be highly reliable, and fast enough that even with a few million detail records (including some invoices that have hundreds of detail lines) that performance is not an issue. This method has served me well for 15 years.

                Steve,

                Am I messing something or are you missing a fetch_find() before you get into the while loop to have the first detail record for the order read up?

                  Steve,

                  Thanks very much for this code.

                  As this wont be working with that many records it should work in a snap.

                    Jeff is right. One of the hazards of typing directly to the message board rather than the Xbasic editor, and no testing. Ya get what ya pay for.
