Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filling a field with text conditionally

    I have the following table that indicates the obesity type based on the value of IMC (index mass of corp)

    IMC values ........ Evaluation
    18.5 - 24.99 ....... Normal
    25 - 29.99 ........ Preobeso
    30 - 34.99 ........ Obeso tipo I
    35 - 39.99 ........ Obeso tipo II
    =>40 .............. Obeso tipo III

    I have created the field IMCvalue (numeric) and the field OType (characters).
    IMCvalue field is a calculated field based on the height and weigth of person that is working normaly, but I want to fill the OType field with text based on the data of the table.
    For example I want that OType field shows Normal if IMCvalue is between 18.5 - 24.9

    Waiting for somebody help.

    Examine the onchange events for the weight and height fields in my sample for one approach.

    Otype could also be a calculated field with the expression.

    Code:
    case(between(imcvalue,18.5,24.99),"Normal",between(imcvalue,25,29.99),"Preobeso",between(imcvalue,30,34.99),"Obeso tipo I",between(imcvalue,35,39.99),"Obeso tipo II",imcvalue>=40,"Obeso tipo III")

      I would not recommend that the numbers for the obesity-types ranges be hard coded. These numbers can change and you want to be able to make the change without having to get into the code. I would put the numbers into a table and make a function to evaluate the IMCvalue against the values in a table. The example attached has a user defined function (UDF) named imc_eval() called from the CanSaveRecord Event field rule in the Pacientes table.

        Just a different approach using Lookupc()

          yes, better approach. actually, mine not reliable outside the ranges and with more absurd values.

            Many thanks for your solution, it works perfectly. I was trying sometimes using "between", but I couldn't and errrors were displayed.

              Raphael,

              The other suggestions posted are worth studying as well. If your possible choices exceed the indicate 5 and/or the choices may be added to over time, the lookup() would likely be the way to handle the situation.

              For a short static list of possible choices the calculated field will suffice. Another easy way to accomplish this is with a simple list lookup field rule.

                Many thanks. I like the use of UDF, since I have just to put on the table the values, that will be useful when having another table. I realizes that the changes on the field OType are produced only after saving the record, so I have added "save record" on the ON CHANGE events of the fields Height and Weight and the evaluation is inmediately displayed on OType field

                  Many thanks. I like the use of UPC since it is easy to set different values on the table.
