Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    create directory and save pdf

    I use the following script tot create a directory for each new record:

    tbl = table.current()
    number = alltrim(tbl.bz_adm_nr)
    client = alltrim(tbl.bz_client)+" "
    dir_create_recurse("c:\clientfolders\\"+number+" "+client)

    (thanks Stan, http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ghlight=folder).

    What code do I need to save a report named invoice1 to the corresponding directory? Can I use the same code to save a second report named letter1 to the same directory? I don't know anything about xbasic. If needed I'm happy to give more info.

    Re: create directory and save pdf

    I would go with something like

    Code:
    tbl = table.current()
    number = alltrim(tbl.bz_adm_nr)
    client = alltrim(tbl.bz_client)+" "
    base_path = "c:\clientfolders\\"
    dir_name = number+" "+client
    dir_create_recurse(base_path+dir_name)
    report.saveas("your report name", "PDF", "", "",base_path+dir_name+"\\"+"your report name"+".pdf")
    Similar for a letter.
    There can be only one.

      Re: create directory and save pdf

      Are you trying to save a pdf type file?

      I have a routine that saves reports as PDF's in one folder, but it could be easily modified to go to the created folder.

      Code:
      pdf_filename = "C:\Forecast\reports"+chr(92)+trim(tbl.location)+"_Pavement_forcast.pdf"
      		if file_exists(pdf_filename)
      			file_remove(pdf_filename)
      		end if
      		filt1 = "location="+quote(trim(tbl.Location))
      		query.filter = filt1
      		query.order = ""
      		report.SaveAs("Condition Letters","PDF",query.filter,query.order,pdf_filename)
      Wehre I have
      Code:
      pdf_filename = "C:\Forecast\reports"+chr(92)+trim(tbl.location)+"_Pavement_forcast.pdf"
      you should put your created folder name+file name

        Stan I tried your solution but received an error message. I don't know what I'm doing wrong?

        tbl = table.current()
        number = alltrim(tbl.bz_adm_nr)
        client = alltrim(tbl.bz_client)+" "
        base_path = "c:\clientfolders\\"
        dir_name = number+" "+client
        dir_create_recurse(base_path+dir_name)
        report.saveas("procedure", "PDF", "", "",base_path+dir_name+"\\"+"procedure"+".pdf")

          This didn't seem right when I looked at your code...

          client = alltrim(tbl.bz_client)+" "

          Not sure the purpose of the +" " and that might be a problem when referencing a directory.

          Change it to

          client = alltrim(tbl.bz_client)

          and see what happens.

            Re: create directory and save pdf

            The error message is gone, great. One more question. The script produces one pdf of all records in the database. I only need the current record. How can this be realized?

              report.saveas("procedure", "PDF", "filter", "",base_path+dir_name+"\\"+"procedure"+".pdf")

              Just need to insert a filter expression which chooses which record(s) to include.

                Re: create directory and save pdf

                I generated this code with action script. It saves the current record in the main alpha five directory:
                record_number = current_record_number()
                query.filter = "recno() = " + record_number
                query.order = ""

                :Report.Archive("procedure beroep",query.filter,query.order)

                I don't know how to combine your code with the action script code. I tried for example:
                tbl = table.current()
                number = alltrim(tbl.bz_adm_nr)
                client = alltrim(tbl.bz_client)
                base_path = "c:\clientfolders\\"
                dir_name = number+" "+client
                dir_create_recurse(base_path+dir_name)

                record_number = current_record_number()
                query.filter = "recno() = " + record_number
                query.order = ""

                report.saveas("procedure", "PDF", "filter", "",base_path+dir_name+"\\"+"procedure"+".pdf")

                It probably makes no sense at all. It's because xbasic is like Japanese to me. It generates the error message: invalid report filter expression: 'filter'.

                  Re: create directory and save pdf

                  Since you are writing the filter externally to the report save as and storing it in the query.filter variable...

                  report.saveas("procedure", "PDF", query.filter, "",base_path+dir_name+"\\"+"procedure"+".pdf")

                  In your attempt there actually is no "filter" variable to reference and it shouldn't be quoted anyway. What I was suggesting would have looked like

                  report.saveas("procedure", "PDF", "recno() = " + record_number, "",base_path+dir_name+"\\"+"procedure"+".pdf")
                  There can be only one.

                    Re: create directory and save pdf

                    Thanks for the script Stan! It works. Yes! The complete script is:

                    tbl = table.current()
                    number = alltrim(tbl.bz_adm_nr)
                    client = alltrim(tbl.bz_client)
                    base_path = "c:\clientfolders\\"
                    dir_name = number+" "+client
                    dir_create_recurse(base_path+dir_name)

                    record_number = current_record_number()
                    query.filter = "recno() = " + record_number
                    query.order = ""

                    report.saveas("procedure", "PDF", query.filter, "",base_path+dir_name+"\\"+"procedure"+".pdf")
