XBasic Newbie

I have a table with 2 fields, one is a date, the other a character.

I need to enter 365 new records, one for each day of 2010. The character field can be blank.

I'm sure xbasic can make this easy, but I'm not quite sure where to start.

(Right now, I have the table open and I'm entering them manually. I'm tempted to open the dbf file in excel and do it that way, but I'm thinking this is a good chance to learn some xbasic.)

In pseudo code the script would:

a) open the table 
b) navigate to the last record in date order
c) assign the date field value to a variable
d) use a while ... end while loop to
   -- increment the date variable
   -- begin a new record
   -- assign the incremented date variable to the date field
   -- commit the new record
   -- loop back and repeat until the date variable is the last day of 2010
e) close the table

Is this what you want

tbl=table.open("something") 'something would be replaced with your table name

tbl.batch_begin()
for i=1 to 364       '1 less than 365 since Date10 is already loaded with the first date of the year
	tbl.enter_begin()
		tbl.Date_cal=date10
		date10=date10+1  'add 1 to the date10 variable
	tbl.enter_end()
next i
tbl.batch_end()
tbl.close()

this code creates a table with dates from the 1st of the year until the end of the year - seems I missed the fact that you already have started the table manually.

This one is based on Tom Cone's post

tbl=table.open("something")'something is replaced with your table name

tbl.fetch_last()  'find the last record in the table
date10=tbl.Date_cal+1 'fetch the date field and increase it by 1


tbl.batch_begin()
while date10<{01/01/2011}' continue while date10 is less than the first day of January 2011
	tbl.enter_begin()
		tbl.date_cal=date10
		
	tbl.enter_end()
	date10=date10+1 'increase the date by 1 for the next loop   
end while
	
tbl.batch_end()
tbl.close()

This takes into consideration that you already have begun entering dates manually into the table.

I do this every 3 months using a slightly different approach.
1) Made Date field autoinc with no default value in FR
2) Manually entered the 1st record in the default browse with an initial value 1/1/2009
3) Created the script:

Dim i as N
FOR i= 1 to 90
 Record_add("Tablename","sometext=")
NEXT i
END

I run it every 3 mths or so to precreate dates. Sometext is then populated by the user as needed.
