Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browse record amt picked up twice in calc field

    I have a form based on a many-to-one set. User selects criteria for embedded browse, all records appear to retrieve successfully. All the grand total calculated fields for the many-side of the browse calculate correctly, but any for the one-side seem to think the first record is retrieved twice. When I view the expression builder, the result is correct. When I preview the report based on the form, the result is correct. But the calculated total on the form is always over by the first record.

    The calculated total for gross amount on the form, for example, is: total(deal->Gross,GRP->Grand,GRP->comm_dtl). This returns a correct total in the expression builder, but not the form. I had to modify the report to say: total(deal->Gross,GRP->detail), which also returns the correct total. Can't use that expression on the form, however. I read in the documentation somewhere that the total() function is designed only for reports, not forms (although A5 seems to have no trouble building them when adding the calculated fields.) Am I trying to do something "unnatural" with the many-to-one set?

    A sample database illustrating the issue will go a long way towards getting some diagnostic help.
    There can be only one.

      Yep, sorry. That probably was a little vague.

        I don't have v9 on the machine I'm using today and am having problems saving any changes to the calculated fields without Alpha closing (under v8).

        Your usage of total() is unusual in this situation. Total() when used in a form context usually refers to a one to many child table.

        See what happpens with a "gross" calculated field with the expression

        nw_gross = tablesum("deal","deal_no = "+deal_no,"gross")
        There can be only one.

          Yeah, that's what made me wonder about trying to do something with the total() function that it's not designed for.

          I tried the calculated expression you suggested Actually: tablesum("deal","deal_no='"+deal_no+"'","gross")

          and it re-evaluated to:
          total(tablesum("deal","deal_no='"+deal_no+"'","gross"),grp->comm_dtl)

          and I added "grp->grand", which now returns the correct result when selecting the records. I was a little concerned about using the tablesum() function because I figured I wouldn't be able to use that for the New and PreOwned calculated fields, however. Since the total retrieved is always plus one though, I could subtract 1 from the total if it's greater than 0. :-) Thanks for the suggested function.
