Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Version 9 -How do I do this?

    Hi,

How do I add a table or set to Alpha Version 9? I had Version 4.5 before and have set up the tables and sets in that version. I'm putting Version 9 on a new computer and would like to add the tables and sets from Version 4.5. How would I do this with Vista? The tables and sets were designed and used previously in Version 4.5. I have heard that you can't drag a file into Alpha 9 with Vista as I could with 4.5 and XP. Is this accurate info?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I tried dragging the file from a cd to Alpha 9. It seemed to work but I couldn't access the table or set.

Re: Version 9 -How do I do this?

New computer? = Make the same folder you had for version 4.5 on your old computer as your app folder. then copy the whole app to that new folder.
*This is assuming you have a database file already in v4.5.
Then start V9 and run the adb in the new folder you set up.
    All should be there.

If you have made a new adb in your new computer, then copy the dbf's and associated files + the sets files to the folder where the new adb is located. At the control panel, right click and choose to add tables. You can then add the tables and sets to the new adb.

You may have to reconstruct any udfs, scripts, etc or copy the old ones from the old adb.

EDIT: A folder/app/data in vista should not be put into the "c:\program files\myapp" or c:\program files\a5v9\myapp" area of the hard disk. You should have the folder under the c: root drive like "c:\myapp". It is just good practice and will work better sometimes.

If this means that you are storing your user database files in (or below) the Alpha Five executable directory in Program Files, do not do that.

Create a folder outside of Program Files for any user database files.

Martha, there may be a simpler answer that explains what you've bumped into. Often files stored on CD are marked "read only". When you copy them to hard disk they remain "read only". You might check the copies you put on disk to see if they are marked "read only". If so, uncheck "read only" in the properties of each table (DBF, CDX, FPT) file.

You can do the whole folder at one time if you write click on it and change all the files from read only.

          Good catch Tom

ok, so i am not knowledgeable in computers, etc. we got alpha 4 back in the 90's. i read through the manual and set up our databases. i find the sample databases alpha has in the trial for alpha5v9 not applicable to our business.

we would like to upgrade to v9 and are in the process of buying 2 new computers. how difficult will it be to transfer our databases in alph4v6 to v9?

thanks for any help - i'll copy and give to our computer guy.

              Eileen,

              HI.

There is a whole area in the forum to help you with this. Also, this is another thread about something else.

But to help a little. Mostly your tables will be useable. The forms, reports and anything else will have to be rebuilt. Check the threads under the upgrade from a4 to a5 and you will see a lot that will help you.
