Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

action scripting - copy operation failing

    Hello Alpha5'ers
I am in need of some assistance. I am new to both Alpha 5 and the basic language. Ive searched the forum, but didnt find anything that helped. By the way, everything I am doing in A5 is with the genies. First, I will describe what I am attempting to do and then Ill describe the issue. I have two A5 tables. I need a subset of records from the Primary table and a subset of records from the transaction table. I need to keep only those records where the primary key exists in both the primary table subset and the transaction table subset. In other words, I need the intersection of the two subsets. The first thing I did was create two Copy Operations to extract the needed records from each table. Then I created a Set with the two new tables. In the link definition, I selected to include records from the primary table only if a matching child record DOES exist. This worked great and I created a browse and report from this set of records. Now the process needs to be menu driven for end users. It is the automation process that has caused my road block. On the code tab using action scripting, I set up actions to run the copy operations and open the browse. Running the code generates a message, which says, The current table cannot be overwritten. However, running the copy operations manually from the operations tab, the tables are overwritten. Why the difference? I have added zapping and packing actions prior to the copy operation but that did not make a difference. I tried using only one copy operation, where I created a subset of Primary table with a copy operation and linking that to the transaction table. I also tired inserting a table.close() command into the script that was created by the genie and couldnt get that to work at all. I am sure there is a piece of the puzzle that is missing. But I am at a loss as to why the copy operation will not work when called via action scripting. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks, Sherry.

Re: action scripting - copy operation failing

    Hi Sherry,
I see your thread for sure got buried....Two things I think would help. First, when posting, add an occasional space/paragraph so that we can read it easier!! :)

Second, and this is something that should be learned right away by new users, is to present a sample of the problem as this is many times the only way to give an appropriate solution to an issue/problem.

I wish a "Sticky" would be made with JUST the instruction for doing this--it is mentioned but a bit buried amidst other things in the Before Posting note. Using the top menu of Alpha, choose Tools-->Zip Database.

Most times just zip up everything until more experienced with what to and what not to include. Next is to test the zip file to make sure it will work for us here on the messageboard. Extract it to a different folder than your current project, open it from Alpha and make sure the issue can be seen. Next is to attach the zip file to a post in the thread....make sure instructions are given in a step by step (ALL STEPS!!) in order to guide potential helpers to the problem. Include what is happening and what it is that you feel should be happening (not "it's not working"...."it's broke"....).

To attach a zip file (or whatever), one way is to make sure you are using the Advanced posting method. Choose the paperclip icon, browse to the zip file, upload it and close the window once done. Then back to the paperclip icon, and click on the little down arrow to its right-->choose the file and insert it. Wherever your cursor is is where the attachment will be placed.

    Any questions please ask.

BTW a belated Welcome to the messageboard! :)
    Mike

Re: action scripting - copy operation failing

      Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply. I've been out of the office past couple of weeks.

I appreciate your tips! Will zip up evreything the next time.

I did stumble onto a solution. Not sure why it made a difference, but when I converted the action scripting to xbasic (just to see the code behind, not that I know it yet) the error message was not generated, the table was created and the browse opened. Odd. But it's working. I haven't looked at it since returning from my PTO (personal time off).

      Thanks again.
      Sherry
