Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Selecting field conditionally

I have developed a Clinical History and part of it is Patient data that has the following fields:
    Code
    First name
    Last name
    Date of birdth
    Age
    Province
    City
The field Age is a calculated field.
The Province field is based on a Table lookup (province)so I can select from a list that is displayed
The city field is based on a Table lookup (city)so I can select the city from the list.
The form Patient data is working normally, but I want that the items of the field city be displayed conditionaly; for example when Province is Pichincha the cities displayed should be. Quito, Machachi, Sangolqui, Cayambe, Ambato, Latacunga; when the province is Guayas the cities displayed should be: Guayaquil, Playas, Naranjal, Santa Elena, Salinas; when the province is Imbabura the cities displayed should be: Ibarra, Otavalo, Atuntaqui, Cotacachi and so on for the other province.
Any help about this matter will be very appreciated

    Re: Selecting field conditionally

I suggest you combine the city and province tables into a single table. Each record should contain fields for both city and province. You could then modify the table lookup field rule defined for the City field. The modification would add a filter to limit the display of cities to those who have "province" fields that match the previously selected province field value.

      Re: Selecting field conditionally

      Hello Tom
      Many thanks for your help.
I have created a new table called location, with the fields province and city as you suggested and set it as the lookup table for the City field. I set as a filter: Province=Pichincha.
Opening the Patient data form in the field city only the cities of Pichincha province are displayed.
Setting as a filter: Province=Imbabura, only the cities of Imbabura province are displayed at the city field.
Besides I have tried with the following filter: previous(field(location,1)) but an error is displayed when click OK on the Expression builder.
      Waiting for your help

        Re: Selecting field conditionally

        Hello Rafael:
To illustrate Tom's suggestion I added a Location table, a DataEntry table and a FormXX based on the DataEntry table. See if this is what you are wanting to do.

Gaby, actually I think Rafael is looking for something closer to this. See the attached example database. Unzip to an empty folder. Open new form "Toms_form".

Rafael, the field widths in your lookup source table (Location) need to match the field widths in your primary tables. I've changed them to match, but wanted to mention it to you since it's easily overlooked.

The example I've posted illustrated a simple filter using the current patient_data province field value to filter the lookup table.

Also note, I've changed the name of your patient data table by replacing the blank space with a hard underscore. Do not uses blank spaces in your object, field or tablenames. Use hard underscores.

            Many thanks Gaby

            That is what I wanted.
The only think that I have added is a filter: unique value for the field Province in the lookup location table of the dataentry table in order to avoid the display of the same Province in the FormXX.
