Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Shorttime and A5_Timestamp issues??

  • Shorttime and A5_Timestamp issues??

    I have searched the message board and am at a standstill. I can display the proper time when I use the interactive window or a dialog box but if I try to populate a column in a browser, I only get 12:00 pm or 24:00:15 37 pm.

    Any ideas on what could be causing this?

    Thanks in advance,

    ? A5_Timestamp()
    = "08:57 AM"

    dim tbl as p
    tbl ="tblworkordertime",FILE_RW_SHARED)
    tbl.WOID = convert_type(varGlobalWOID,"Character")
    tbl.TTIMEDATE = a5_eval_expression("=Date()",local_variables())
    tbl.TTIMESTART = a5_eval_expression("=A5_TIMESTAMP()",local_variables())
    tbl.EMPID = convert_type(varGlobalTechEmpID_Empid,"Character")

    Re: Shorttime and A5_Timestamp issues??

    A bit confused.

    I do not see in your script where you are changing/entering data into a browse.

    Also, the interactive result of "08:57 AM" this what you expected to see in your browse and got
    I only get 12:00 pm or 24:00:15 37 pm
    instead ?

    --which would also confuse me as which one is it?? and how is it that you can have two resulting formats??

      Dave, I share Mike's confusion. Short time data is stored in the table in only one format. When you want to display it differently use the formatting and /or conversion functions that are provided.

        Bear with me guys, My knowledge is limited.
        I would like to use the A5_Timestamp to populate the current time to a table but I always get a similar result when I try to send it direct to the table. A result in the neighborhood if 12:00 pm.
        If I try the interactive window to display the A5_Timestamp I get the proper time.
        I have included the view of the table being populated to show you how I get the same time values even as the minutes pass by.
        I am using the genies XBasic Enter Record to build the code.
        Ttimestart is set up as a shorttime field in the table.

          Re: Shorttime and A5_Timestamp issues??

          I think you've encountered a bug. I get the same repeating results here.

          Try changing
          tbl.TTIMESTART = a5_eval_expression("=A5_TIMESTAMP()",local_variables())
          to this
          tbl.TTIMESTART = NOW()
          The NOW() function returns a Date_Time value. Apparently assigning a date_time value directly to a Short_Time data typed field peels off the "date" component of the Time value.

          Hope this helps.

            Thanks very much Tom!
            That did the job and I am back in action.
            Best Wishes,

              Re: Shorttime and A5_Timestamp issues??

              Dave, I think I see what the original problem was. Is not a bug.

              The function you chose returns a character value, not a short time value. You can't assign character values directly to short_time data typed fields.

              To see this, change the original script

              tbl.TTIMESTART = a5_eval_expression("=A5_TIMESTAMP()",local_variables())
              to this
              tbl.TTIMESTART = ctot(a5_TimeStamp())
              A5_TimeStamp() returns a character value, which is then processed by the CTOT() function. CTOT() takes the character value and converts it to a Short_time value. It works correctly.

              Note: If you need the seconds to be stored in the table, you will need to check and possibly modify your Alpha Fivesystem preference for timestamps. This format will cause the code to include seconds:
