Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Database will not open

My database suddenly will not open. Here is the error message I get.

Error loading\\rlsserver\alpha data\rlsjobs\jcjob.dbf: Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
    C:\\Documents and Settings\donxp\Application data

I don't know what file it is trying to create that already exists. I thought maybe there was a file on the C:\\ path given in the error message, but there isn't. Does anyone know what files alpha creates when opening a database or any other ideas?

    Re: Database will not open

I see four but I don't know why any of those would throw an error. Might try deleting them manually.

The complete path seems to be

    C:\Documents and Settings\smathews\Application Data\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version X
    There can be only one.

      Re: Database will not open

      Stan,
Thanks for the reply, however, I don't understand what files to delete. The only actual file shown in the error message is jcjob.dbf. That file has to be present or Alpha won't open. What files are you suggesting that I might manually delete? Thanks.

        Re: Database will not open

        I read it as

        Error loading\\rlsserver\alpha data\rlsjobs\jcjob.dbf:
Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
        C:\\Documents and Settings\donxp\Application data
Don't know what file Alpha is trying to create in "C:\\Documents and Settings\donxp\Application data......." because the error message is truncated.
        There can be only one.

          Re: Database will not open

I don't know if it is relevant to your problem, but if Alpha is unexpectedly closed, it leaves various files open. I close these by rebooting or logging off. Sometimes I get a message telling me my licence count is exceeded even though I don't appear to have Alpha open - until I reboot.

            A good possibility Larry....

Just a FYI on your current procedure:
Sometimes I get a message telling me my licence count is exceeded even though I don't appear to have Alpha open - until I reboot.
In this case, most likely all that is needed is to go into Task Manager (control + alt + delete OR right click on bottom task bar and choose Task Manager) and stopping all alpha.exe processes will normally do the job without having to reboot.

              Re: Database will not open

I am still unable to open the database. I would classify this as an Alpha bug. Even if I did something wrong in the development, Alpha should not just abandon the database leaving me no way to even open it. Actually the database has been in use for quite some time with no changes. It is possible, as Larry pointed out, that a crash left some work file open. However, since this first happened I have rebooted many times. I interpret the error message to be saying that Alpha is trying to create some file that already exists. It would really be nice if the error message would tell me WHAT file it is trying to create. Does anyone know if Alpha creates some standard type of file, perhaps a certain file extension...or is this something that should be reported to Alpha as a bug. Thanks to all for their input.

                Re: Database will not open

                Try this:

Create a new, empty database in another folder.

Copy everything from your existing database into that new folder. Except, do not copy your .adb, .alm, .alx, or .alb.

Open your new database, and add in all the sets and tables in the new folder.

Can you open & close the new database OK?

If so, then you have only to get the .al* files to it, but let's see how this step goes before we worry about that.

                  Steve,
I made the copy as you indicated and now the database WILL open. However, it is unusable. Any attempt to open table or forms is greeted with the same message as before ("cannot create a file when that file already exists").

Drop all the tables and sets. Add one back in. What happens? Experiment a bit - none of us have your files.

                      Re: Database will not open

Don, do you have any unusual files in your database directory. Files that end in a .$$M extension, for example?

Next, do you have any memo fields in your table(s)? Are the file sizes of the corresponding .FPT files reasonable?

You might also attach a screen shot of your control panel, tables/sets tab, in detail view.
