Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How many rows are showing in this Browse??

    OK I have searched for a couple of days now on what I thought was going to be simple. I have a form based on a set. The topparent table has all of our claimants and in a child table are cases linked by a SSN field. So when this form is open and a claimant selected the user can view in an embedded browse the case history for the claimant. Each row in the browse is a seperate case record. So now for some later logic decisions in my app I wanted to be able to determine how many rows are represented in this browse, in other words I wanted to know if there is 1 or several cases for this claimant. I thought there would be a simple property to check like RowCount for the Browse but I can't find any way to do this. Any help appreciated, thanks.

    Re: How many rows are showing in this Browse??

    I searched for

    "number of rows in a browse"

    Try this for code for a button.

    Code:
    Dim stats as P
    stats.count = 0
    on error goto error_handler
    stats = compute_field_statistics("topparent:[COLOR="Blue"]browse1[/COLOR]:[COLOR="Red"]upc[/COLOR]")
    tsted = stats.count
    ui_msg_box("Count","There are "+alltrim(str(tsted))+" records in the browse.")
    end
    error_handler:
        resume next
    You will need to adjust browse1 to your actual browse object name and upc to any field name visible in the browse.

    If you are dealing with a browse where there will always be at least one child record in the browse you can create a calculated field for the form with the expression

    compute_field_statistics("topparent:browse1:upc").count

    and place that calculated field on the form.

      ASSUMING THIS IS FOR A DESKTOP APP and not a web server application, even though the Count() function is designed for reports, if the form is simple enough perhaps it could be used here in a display calc field defined in the form layout. Count cases grouped by claimant.

        FANTASTIC!! Stan you are the man. That worked perfectly to give me what I wanted. I vaguely recall coming across the compute_field_statistics(), but rejected it for some reason at the time, most likely because I was tired and frustrated at not being able to get past this. I have recorded this in my bag of tricks documentation for future use as well. Thank you very much for the quick reply.

          TOM: I am trying to find out how to create a running number for each record in a child table. A particular client wants a spreadsheet report of multiple invoices for a given day depicting for each invoice number a running number for each child records as they appeared on the original invoice. I believe it needs to be a child table field, not, a logical field.
          Can this be done ?? The message board does not seem to address this specific but simple
          question.
          Kind regards, and hope you can help..

              Good afternoon Stan:

              I implemented the code and it works fine. For the first time I got it right on the first try.

              Thanks for this and all past help as well.

              Regards, John
