Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Search for a record in a different table

    I hoping someone could give me some advice on how to accomplish this.

    I have a customer table with the following fields (for the purpose of this example):

    Name
    Address
    City
    State
    Zip

    We regularly have to send a letter to the post office for a specific customer and this is easily done by addressing it to:

    Postmaster
    City, State Zip (from the customer table)

    Now the problem... We have a list of about 30 post offices that have to have a unique letter sent to them (different than all the others per their internal policies).

    When I print the report, I can set up a conditional statement in the action scripting such as: If Zip = 60611 .or. Zip = 60612 etc then print report 'B' and this would work.

    However, this list of unique post offices may change and my user needs control of which ones fall into this category.

    I can create an external table called unique_PO and have a record for every zip code that has this requirement and that would allow the user to maintain this list.

    I have no idea how to accomplish an 'if' statement that checks to see if the customer zip is listed in the Unique_PO table and if so then print report 'B' instead of report 'A'.

    Hopefully this makes sense ???

    Check out the

    EXIST()

    function in the helps. Possibly this could be used in your conditional statement to answer the question whether a given record can be found (exists) in the external table.

      Re: Search for a record in a different table

      Thanks Tom, I can't believe it was right in front of me but I didn't see it.

      I've added the following to the conditional statement for it to check if the zip code exists in the external table:

      Var->postalck="Print Postal Form - 15 Mile" .and. exist(zip,"zip_appr","Zip_Index")

      However, I need to run a different report if the zip code doesn't exist in the external table and I am having difficulty with the syntax for this. I've tried the following and it doesn't work properly. Any suggestions?

      Var->postalck="Print Postal Form - 15 Mile" .and. exist(zip,"zip_appr","Zip_Index")=.f.

        In action scripting wouldn't you have two print report commands, each with a different condition statement? Each would point to a different report layout.

          Yes, that is what I am attempting to do. However, with using these two conditional statements, both reports print.

          Var->postalck="Print Postal Form - 15 Mile" .and. exist(zip,"zip_appr","Zip_Index")

          Var->postalck="Print Postal Form - 15 Mile" .and. exist(zip,"zip_appr","Zip_Index")=.f.

          I am guessing I have a syntax error in the second statement?

          (The second statement should be a match if the zip does NOT match in the external table)

            Code:
            Var->postalck="Print Postal Form - 15 Mile" .and.[COLOR="Red"] .not. [/COLOR]exist(zip,"zip_appr","Zip_Index")

                You're welcome.

                FYI, the following would probably also work:

                Var->postalck="Print Postal Form - 15 Mile" .and. (exist(zip,"zip_appr","Zip_Index")=.f.)
