Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Data between Alpha Five and a Visual Basic Control

I am trying to find the best way of accomplishing the following and would like any suggestions from the experts.

I need to transfer some serial data over (9 pin) computer com ports and the work around would be with a Alpha Five form and a Visual Basic .Net component. Basically this VB component will capture and convert that data from the serial port, parse it out to a text string and send it to Alpha Five running on the same computer. I have the VB side covered but what do you recommend in regards to a Alpha Five socket to communicate with?
I have seen INET and UDP.

The Alpha Five Program and Visual Basic Component will reside on the same computer (127.0.0.1) and send/receive through the same port number. I don't need to send this info outside through the Internet or anything like that.

    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

Re: Data between Alpha Five and a Visual Basic Control

    Hi Dave,
    First:
You can have VB write the result to a .txt File.
Have A5 access that .TXT file
BUT, maybe we need to know exactly what part of A5 you want the text to go to First ?
A .dbf field , RTF, variable or other, etc. to get it into a form.
If they are on the same computer, I assume you need not have A5 go to the com port to get the VB stuff that it already now has on the computer.
    ps.
I'm only an expert at moving crap from one platform to another.

If you can spend a few bucks, and do it all in A5, This has been a popular suggestion in the past

Re: Data between Alpha Five and a Visual Basic Control

        Thanks for the info Tom
I would like to have a basic Alpha Five program running on a small laptop in a vehicle and transfer work orders to a computer with Alpha Five back at the office.

An initial job would be sent from the office computer, out the serial port to a UHF Kenwood 2-Way radio. The mobile will receive and display as a work ticket. The Technician will fill in details and shoot back to the office in the same manner. Nothing needs to be stored in the mobile computer. I will just be sending a long (no more than 1024 characters) string which will be parsed out on receiving computer.

        I hope this helps,

        Best Wishes,
        Dave

If I understand right you need to have a basic modem program to hadle the data transfer.

I am not sure but there is not direct support to handling data in serial port in Alpha(rs232).

So you have to use third party tools

          Read this thread

I don't think there are ready to use solutions so you may have to do all by yourself.

Is it necessary to use Alpha to control the serial port.

It would be maybe easier to just use a separate modem program to send the needed file(s).
If I got this right the UHF Kenwood 2-Way radio is in this case just an ordinary standard modem.

Re: Data between Alpha Five and a Visual Basic Control

The Eltima Serial Port software will control the serial port so I will communicate just send and receive strings from Alpha to this ActiveX control.
The Kenwood radios just pass the serial data over the air using it's Fleetsync protocol. A computer at a office connected to a radio on one end and a computer in a vehicle connected to a radio on the other. It will be strictly an exchange of a single string each direction based on form field information and will not need to carry instructions to write to the other data base.
                Example of the string:
                STX|006237|Appliance Max|1224 Dawson Blvd|Norcross|GA|30093|Glen Nelson|678-214-8067|Install GPS Board in Kenwood TK-8180|ETX

String will be built and then disassembled by Alpha via Xbasic. I have that part of it. My trouble is general read and write statements into Eltima from Alpha.

I understand how to set the baud rate, parity, stop bits but am not sure how to retool the read and write exchanges.
Here is there basic protocol language:

Take a look at Moxa Pcomm Lite it is free, however not an ActiveX but a dll based solution.
