Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculated field for subgroups of filtered records.

    I've hunted until I'm tired.
    I'm trying to get a calculated field total for a specific group of filtered records on a Form. I haven't mastered the calculated field concept of groupings, clearly, and unable to get my mind around how to construct this, if it is even possible. If expression? Case expression? Another added grp-> in the current calculated field?

    I have a 'Sales" table that holds the sales of stocks. There is a field 'Sale_gain' that holds the value for the gain that I am wishing totalled. The sales_gain is a hard number, numeric type field and not a calculated field. The calculation is made in the function that writes to the Sales table. I have a field named 'sale_type' that has values of 'short term', 'long term' and 'tax-exempt'. I would like to make three calculated fields, one for each of the sales type, that totals the sale_gain value for each sales_type in the current records in focus. I filter the records based on year and/or account and have those records show in an embedded browse. I have a calculated field which totals the sale_gain for all the filtered records in focus. That calculated field is this:
    Code:
    cfSum_Gains = total(Sale_Gain,grp->Grand)
    What I would like is to also have calculated fields which shows me the totals for each of the sub groups of short term, long term and tax-exempt. How do I subgroup on those records within the currently filtered records?

    I'm sure I can generate the value into a session variable using tablesum within the UDF that I have filtering the table, but I would rather the values exist "ambiently" through a calculated field.

    Create indexes one for each of these groups and use dbsum()

      or try:
      cfSum_Gains = total(IF (sale_type="short term", Sale_Gain, 0))

        Mike,
        This is what I use for filtered records on in a report.
        total(Calc->Totalpoamt,Grp->Grand)

          I agree with G. I think this is one of those times when Total() will not work consistently on a form.

          If you had groupings on your form then possibly adding an additional argument would work---the Total() function does not take a standard filter.

          Use dbsum() with a filtered index and it will work.

            I have it in my mind that filtered indexes are a problem. I can't pinpoint from where that originated but I'm thinking this was present as a "stay away from" thing because of corruption and inconsitencies. Thanks...I'll search and read. And Mike... you need to get to bed at a decent hour! ;)

              Morning Mike!

              I have read the same thing regarding the case that when index corruption occurs, it usually involves one or more filtered indexes....but there have been times where speed of processing has made it worth the (minor) risk of doing so.

              If speed is not an issue here Mike, use Tablesum() instead....

              I have to admit I no longer have a clue as to what hour that may be now! :)
