Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How can I use stritran to replace " and \

    I am using stritran to do a form of encoding of a barcode. I have everything setup to work properly but I am trying to change some letters to " and \ but the xbasic will not allow it.

    Does anyone know of a way to encode this so it will take these as text and not part of the code?

    stritran(BS_Serial_Encode, "A", """)
    stritran(BS_Serial_Encode, "B", "\")

    Let me know if you need additional information or if I am not explaining this properly. I can try to find some other symbols to use but I have already had the programming of the barcode scanner started so I would like to find a way to make this work.

    Any advise or suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

    Code:
    BS_Serial_Encode = "AB001BA100ABA"

    ? stritran(BS_Serial_Encode, "A", "\"")
    = "B001B"100"B"

    ? stritran(BS_Serial_Encode, "B", "\\")
    = "A\001\A100A\A"
    In one step.

    Code:
    ? stritran_multi(BS_Serial_Encode,"A"+crlf()+"B",chr(34)+crlf()+chr(92))
    = "\001\"100"\"
    There can be only one.

      Thank you Stan!!

      That was really quick and really easy. I knew there had to be a way but I was not just not finding it anywhere.

      Works great! Thank you for the code for the stritran_multi as well.

        Ando of course you can always...

        Code:
        ? stritran(stritran(BS_Serial_Encode, "A", "\""), "B", "\\")
        = "\001\"100"\"
        There can be only one.

          Re: How can I use stritran to replace " and \

          I am actually going through every number and letter so I have it running like this:

          Code:
          BS_Serial_Encode = stritran(BS_Serial_Encode, "A", ";")
          BS_Serial_Encode = stritran(BS_Serial_Encode, "B", "^")
          BS_Serial_Encode = stritran(BS_Serial_Encode, "C", "$")
          BS_Serial_Encode = stritran(BS_Serial_Encode, "D", "~")
          BS_Serial_Encode = stritran(BS_Serial_Encode, "E", "!")
          BS_Serial_Encode = stritran(BS_Serial_Encode, "F", "'")
          It is easier for me to read, make sure there are no coding errors and read the encryption code.

          At the beginning of the code it assigns a new BS_Serial_Encode to process and at the end it prints the report with the barcode on it.

          I know this is not a 100% secure way of encrypting something but I am having a barcode scanner programmed to decode this and it regrettably is not capable of much more than this.

          Thank you again for your help with this!!

            Re: How can I use stritran to replace " and \

            Build your translation lists and use stritran_multi()

            Code:
            inlist = "A,B,C,D,E,F"
            outlist = ";,^,$,~,!,'"
            inlist = comma_to_crlf(inlist)
            outlist = comma_to_crlf(outlist)

            BS_Serial_Encode = "FEDCBA"

            ? stritran_multi(BS_Serial_Encode,inlist,outlist)
            = "'!~$^;"
            This is the sort of thing that could really benefit from a udf.

            Code:
            FUNCTION tti_encode AS C (string AS C )
            	tti_encode = ""
            	IF alltrim(string) = ""
            		exit function
            	END IF
            	inlist = "A,B,C,D,E,F" '<-add as many here as you like comma separated
            	outlist = ";,^,$,~,!,'" '<- add the substitution characters here comma separated
            	inlist = comma_to_crlf(inlist)
            	outlist = comma_to_crlf(outlist)
            	tti_encode = stritran_multi(string,inlist,outlist)
            END FUNCTION
            Code:
            BS_Serial_Encode = "FEDCBA"

            ? tti_encode(BS_Serial_Encode)
            = "'!~$^;"

            ? tti_encode("")
            = ""

              If the length of the string to translate is under 1024 (or you break it up into sizes smaller than that), and if using it for a barcode, I suspect it would be, then chrtran() is much faster than strtran()

              E.g.
              ?chrtran("A3 B5","1234567890ABCDEFGHIJKL","0987654321abcdefghijk")
              = "a8 b6"
              Regards,

                I really like both of the ideas.

                Stan - There are some benefits of using the UDF of this in a couple of areas that I might look at. I have not used UDFs much but this might be the case I give it a try.

                Ira - Using the chrtran in my bulk print section would be a great option especially if it will help it run faster. My only concern with chrtran is that it is case sensitive but I can always convert it to uppercase before running it through the chrtran.

                Thank you both again for all of the help and extra ideas to improve my code!!

                  Or just place both upper and lower case characters in the 2nd parameter and translate each to whatever is desired. Then no case conversion is needed.
