The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    OLE Errors

    We just converted our systems from v5 to v9. In v5, we had numerous documents where we would create a rich text format and insert data fields into it. When we edit the document, Alpha would bring up word and we could edit to our heart's content. In version 9, the documents don't print, and if we attempt to edit them, they present in word with several or many columns which cannot be changed back to 1 column.

    I have attached a document that shows what is hppening. Had to zip it, pictures in word are very big.

    This is critical, so if anyone knows the magic secret, please let me know.

    You're not gonna show us the ole script?

    In V5 you could have

    wordApp.Documents.Add

    In later versions the syntax is more strict and you have to functionalize the methods and functions

    wordApp.Documents.Add()
    wordApp.Documents.New()
    wordApp.Select()
    There can be only one.

      Stan,

      Thanks for the reply, but there is no script. We just set a document up in Alpha, then tried to edit it. If you double click in the body of the letter, it opens word and shows what I sent. In v5 it worked just fine.

        I've been experimenting. Try this:

        Open a new report. Create an OLE object on the report. Tell OLE that it is a Microsoft Word type of object. Alpha will open an instance of Word. The useable are of the Word Document will be about 1/4 of an inch. I've tried it with Word, Word 6.0, 7.0, and word 2.0, all with the same results. There obviously seems to be an issue here.

          When I specify Microsoft Word Doc for the ole object Alpha (V5 and V8) hangs with 100% of processor usage. I can do Excel (starting Excel first) and Pdf files (starting Acrobat Reader first).

            My version 5 actually opened word with a full page. The problem is that we have at least 100 of these type of reports. If v9 can't process them then v9 can't be used!

            So... maybe I'm onto something? Now all that needs to be done is for Alpha to address it.

                Curiouser and curiouser...

                Although I have problems editing the Word OLE, The documents actually print, although it seems like they are sending vector graphics to the printer. Alpha runs through its print process reasonably quickly, then the printer "thinks" for literally a couple of minutes as it is rendering the document.

                  Hi Tom,

                  I tested in A5v9 and had the same experience as Stan, A5 crashes.

                  Maybe there are other ways to get the job done, but I need more information how and what you are doing with the documents. Nowadays you can build up your Word document with xbasic code entirely. Maybe you spend an private email on it.

                    Thanks for your reply. This is only one issue I am having with Alpha ver 9. Last weekend, after a year of unit testing, we copied or tables, indexes, and memos over from ver 5. On Monday, we were anticipating some minor, isolated problems. Was I wrong! From 8 AM Monday, through Midnight Tuesday, we had nothing but major problems. Our "system" is a loosely connected group of databases that all refer to one base of information, the client and his cases. At any given time, we can have over 170 users accessing information. We have had the same "system" since it was developed in version 1. The "New and Improved" version 9 system came to its knees. Our users were locking each other out, and nobody was able to process their work. By Wednesday morning, I had to take the version 9 system down and copy the data back to version 5 so that we could continue doing business.

                    As I said, these systems have been working for our agency for over 15 years. The conversion to version 5 was traumatic, but once done, we were able to run. Version 9 stopped us in our tracks. I always thought that new versions were supposed to be an improvement to prior versions, and that things that worked before should continue to work, even better. I am obviously disillusioned.

                      That's a big problem. I hope it doesn't force you to start from scratch.

                          E.G. Running VMWare ESX or the Microsoft version with multiple Windows servers in memory. In that case you can build a Windows server besides the production server in an easy way. Or else you need physical hardware. I can imagine that you build the new environment with A5 version 9 or 10 and when tested and ready swap the servers.

                            We actually have a completely different server for our ver 9 system. Our old ver 5 server is getting too full, and we wanted to isolate the alpha systems from all of our other stuff. That is why it was so simple to cut over and then switch back.
