Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Last Record in a group

I am trying to find a way to reference the last record in a group in an emb browse or stand alone browse (not on a report) where records are sorted by groupID. Please see attached.
Alpha has First(), Last(), Previous(), but surprisingly no Next(). A Next() function would have solved my problem. Any suggestion? Thanks.

Re: Last Record in a group

What does "find a way to reference the last record in a group" mean? Are you trying to build a query that only displays the "last" records in each group? Are you trying to export the "last" records in each group? Are you trying to highlight the "last" record in each group? what?

Re: Last Record in a group

      Hi Tom:
Purpose: I have a GrpTotal (calc field) that returns the total of each group and it appears in the 1st record of each group. Instead of showing the group total on the same row as the 1st record of each group I would like to show it on the row containing the last record of each group (if possible and if it's not too much trouble). Please see attached.

Gaby, sorry, the creative muse is silent (at least for me). Don't see an easy solution. I suppose a script could be written that would fetch through the records, blanking all grptot fields except the last in each group. For the last in each group the script could compute the current grptot and stick the value in that field. This would give you the desired result. However, the result would not be dynamic. It would give you a snapshot showing totals as of a particular moment in time, only. Data entry occurring afterwards would not be reflected in the grptot fields until you re-ran the script.

No problem. It's good enough the way it is now. Thanks for your feedback.

Number the detail lines with the routine that keeps the number of entries in the parent record.

Then you can compare the parent with the detail to see if you are on the last record.

OR....instead of their "Easy" ways, you could make your little problem into a huge one (as I did once!) where you can dynamically create groups, totals, and such. :)

The attached screen shots have data from tables, calculated fields and subtotals/totals (placed where wanted). It can be shown in detail or summary mode.

;) ...just teasing a bit Gaby--you already indicated what you wanted was not worth a ton of work---but I wanted to also point out to future readers that it is possible to go even further than what you are doing....and oddly this seems to be decently stable as a browse (changes allowed in browse...new records via additional form).

                Hi Mike:
If Alpha had a Next() function (surprising that it doesn't) it would have helped.
Pretty amazing what your have in your screen shots. I am going to take a closer look at them and try to figure out how it was done (If I can come up with something similar even without the dynamic aspect of it, I'll be happy) - Thanks.
