Form field read only except for adding new records

I have field in a table that I want to be set to read only on any form that the field is displayed on except when entering a new record. When entering a new record for the table you need to be able to enter data into the field. I know that I can program events on a specific form to set the form field to read only and then set it to not read only when adding a new record but was wondering if there was an easier way in field rules or somewhere else that I just missed in documentation and searching the forum.

It seems that if I set skip to true, in the field rules, that it does ship the field but only if I set it on the correct field. (No I have not drunk any Green Beer today yet)

Now I just need to figure out what conditional code to put in the skip to set skip to true for existing records only.

I'm not a fan of putting code in field rules that relies on a form being available. That said you can put this as the caneditfield event code for the field in question.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I agree about tying field rule event code to a form but your suggestion got me thinking and this code seems to work in the CanEditField.

if vPptr.mode_get() != 2 then
    cancel()

I looked at that but doing so precludes any change to the field value. If you actually wanted to make a correction via another form or browse..........

In this case I do not what the customer to ever be able to change the field with the exception of a xbasic function that I call to change it.

Here is the expression to use in the skip rule.

TABLE.CURRENT().MODE_GET() <> 2

Does pretty much the same as your event code.
