Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Page breaks for wide reports

I need to print a wide (several columns) report. It will not fit on one page of legal landscape and the user is adamant that it not have multiple data rows on the same page for each row. She wants the report to print on one page then print another page that she can place beside the first in order to see all the information for each row. She wants the pages numbered so they can be easily placed in order. I don't know how to place a page break to the right of data to start a new page. Also how would I number the first left hand page 1 the first right hand page 2 then left hand 3, etc?

How much money does she want to pay for this customization? I fear it's going to be very time consuming and difficult.

Could you produce two reports and then let her marry the pages to each other after they both have run?

Is she an Excel guru? Maybe you could dump the data to Excel and let her print it from there? This is sort of what it sounds like she wants anyway.

Personally, this sounds like a case where the cost to achieve the desired result will far exceed the "benefit".

If I were in your shoes I'd ask her how she prints her reports now? Maybe that will give you some ideas.

      Thanks Tom.
She says that it is possible in Excel and Lotus why not in Alpha? This user has a high 'resistance to change' factor and has worked with Lotus extensively. I'm wondering if I could page number a report with odd number pages and the next report with even number pages. Do you know of a way to do that?

If it were me I'd ask her to produce a sample for you to study. I think what she's specifically asking for might be very difficult even in Excel or Lotus.

No, I'm sorry, can't help you with the page numbering.

While the client is always right, it's smarter to avoid doing business with someone who has expectations that can't be satisfied.

Perhaps others will chime in offering solutions for you that make my negativity look silly. I hope so!

It is also possible in Excel and Lotus to completely destroy a spreadsheet by sorting on a column without all columns selected. Does she want that (dis)functionality built in as well? Rather than a report in Alpha I would offer her the ability to export the data to Excel, use Alpha's OLE methods to format the result and set the print options.

Alpha can even direct the result to be printed.
          There can be only one.

So prepare a table with the data as needed and then use Alpha DAO to export to excel.

You'll have a nice excel sheet that she can then use the excel print options with.

You may want to have a macro in excel that does some finalization of the look.

Thanks guys for your help. I had researched this and came to the same conclusions. This is a 'Prima Dona' type user that is very demanding and particular about how something is done. Unfortunately she signs my paycheck, I have to do what I can even when I know better.
