Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't open a set

    I have been working for ages on a booking and invoice database and thought I was nearly there.

    I try to open a set and I keep getting an error message which says:

    Error loading c:\alpha\bankings_invoices.set: Record number is past end of table.

    I can't repair it or edit it or anything, I'm not sure how many tables are in the set and if I delete the set I will lose the forms and reports I have designed for it, can anyone tell me how or if I can correct this problem.

    Regards

    Judith

    rebuild the indexes for each table in the set and try again.

    open each table in the set individually and see if there is a problem with a table.

        Re: Can't open a set

        In the interactive window try

        dim ptr as P
        ptr = set.open_repair("bankings_invoices", FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)

        To get the tables in the set try

        LIST_FILES_IN_SET("bankings_invoices")
        There can be only one.

          Sorry if I sound dim Stan, but I have typed the following in to the interactive window

          dim ptr as P
          ptr = set.open_repair("bankings_invoices",FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)

          I get an error message which says No code is currently selected, I am obviously not doing something right but as a novice I haven't any idea what? Can you help?

          Thanks

            Re: Can't open a set

            If you haven't done this before it would seem strange.

            Two ways

            Copy and paste the code into the interactive

            dim ptr as P
            ptr = set.open_repair("bankings_invoices",FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)

            Arrow up to the first line and hit the enter key
            Arrow to the second line and hit enter

            Or

            Hilight both lines (selecting them), then use the Run button
            There can be only one.

              Thanks for your patience Stan, I have done as you asked highlighted the text and clicked the run button, this time no error message but nothing appears to be happening?

              Thats not quite true - nothing happens after the first line, but after the second line the error message appears

              Error loading bankings_invoices.SET: Record number is past end of table

                That means the function didn't find any problems in the things it processes.

                You'll have to use the other suggestion to get the tables involved and build a new set. Then you can copy the layouts and operations to the new set.

                You have compacted the database?

                  Oh dear, well thats my Easter break done for. I had designed a reconciliation report that literally took me hours all that I had done was back up the database before I was going to get the runtime version ready for putting onto another computer.

                    Other things we can try.

                    dim ptr as P
                    ptr = set.open("bankings_invoices")
                    ptr.duplicate("bankings_invoices2")
                    FILE_ADD_TO_DB(A5.GET_PATH()+CHR(92)+"bankings_invoices2.SET")

                    Does this work and create the new set?
                    Can you open the new set?

                      Thank you so much for your help Stan, I tried your suggestion and after the line ptr.duplicate("bankings_invoices2")I get an error message Invalid number of fields.

                      I now get a different error message saying - not a recognised DBF format.

                        I'm sure you have confidential information in your database. If you want to trust me, try zipping up the database and emailing it to me. I'll see if I can find anything.

                        I'll understand if you don't want to do that.

                            Hi Stan, can I have your email address so that I can send you the zipped database. I have tried doing this through your profile but there doesn't appear to be anything to let me attach files.
