Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to upgrade an App

I am seeking advice from the pro developers on how to upgrade an application.
Scenario: I have developed an app, networked with files on a server machine and each station with its RT; not using shadow db at all. The app (let's call it Version1) was installed a few months ago. In the mean time at the request of the company I have been adding more features (scripts, layouts, calc fields, tables, etc...) to a copy that I keep on a USB drive, let's call it Version2.
The big question is how do I go about updating the files on the server to Version2 ?
With Version1 on the server and version2 on my USB drive, how to I install version2 without loss of data. Do I copy only dbf files from the server to the USB drive or do I copy all files except dbf files from my USB drive to the server machine, or...?

Any pointer will be much appreciated.

    Gaby,

You should really do a search on this forum. This issue has been discussed a lot and covered in detail.

      Hi Gaby,
Do I copy only dbf files from the server to the USB drive
This will copy only the data from your server to your USB--include the CDX if any indices are needed and any FPT as well (memo fields).

or do I copy all files except dbf files from my USB drive to the server machine
This will copy (overwrite) any layouts (forms, browses,...), reports, what have you but NO data to the server....do not include any cdx or fpt files either.

Guess you have it correct in your mind, just did not include/exclude the cdx or fpt files along with the dbf.

Stan, Tom, and others always seem to have a link to the file types and such---it is in the help file as well and will get you the link.

      EDIT--here is a link http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...File_Types.htm

Copy all files except DBF and FPT (if you have any of the latter) to the server. However, if your app use either the built-in security system or one of your own and if users have made changes, say to passwords, then you have another issue to deal with. I won't go into that unless you say it is an issue.

Also there are utilities that can help you be more selective in updating, at least one of which is in the code archive. I generally update only the support files affected by whatever changes I have made, but as long as you don't copy DBF and FPT you are pretty safe. BUT, always make a backup of the target DB before doing anything in case something gets messed up.

And cdx unless you care to rebuild your indexes.
          There can be only one.

Thanks guys for the prompt replies.
I first went through the file types as MikeC suggested. I did a search and read an old post with a reply from an Alpha five employee saying that if new fields are added to the tables then the problem is more complex without further explanation.
The above replies gave me a good idea on what to do and especially not what not to do.
            Thanks guys.

Here are a few related links after doing a quick search. I confess there are better ones out there then these. But then again. I only spent 5-minutes on this.
