Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Shadow Copy Out of Network

I am wondering, does shadow copy work when you are not in the same network as the Master Copy?

I have a client that needs to take a database copy on the road with him. Will the shadow copy work when he is not on the Master Copy network?

Re: Shadow Copy Out of Network

As the shadow basically allows a networked user to have local layouts (forms and such) and access the data from the master, without a master you would have forms with no data. If he needs it, use a copy of the master which has all....but no way to easily synchronize if he is planning to make any changes while users are doing the same....

That is the main issue. How to synchronize? I can have the client create a backup copy and use it while he is out of the office. But if any changes are made on the master copy, he will not be able to restore his copy to the master copy.

Does any body have a solution for how to synchronize a non shadow copy?

Re: Shadow Copy Out of Network

Think about it....how would you synchronize manually? Several ways to automate somewhat but decisions would still have to be made manually for many, if not all changes. How could you possibly automate it completely when a user input correct, up to date data say, and the user who took a backup days ago, then changes the same data but is incorrect....you would have to have them side by side and visually make each decision.

There are third party deDupe products available that follow the same principles...a side by side comparison of any changes.....you have to decide what takes priority....size, time of change, who made the change......

This is not an easy task.....best to not even do it if possible...or have certain files off limits so that no one else makes changes to the files the Off-Network user changes.

        Just a few thoughts....

As Mike says, if you download files to a mobile laptop, lock them on the server until the laptop is docked and the changes are applied.
I you do choose this option, it is as well to set a flag on the dataset which has changed so that you only upload the actual changes - not the whole database.
Once uploaded, the locks can be removed.
            Or.
Something like a Web'n'Walk card working through a reverse proxy (or similar) server set up will allow working on the move.

Following first principle:Never allow users latitude to do adjudication.
I have in practice used the following very successfully for remote sales points. I didn't have much confidence when I implemented it but has been working reliably now for years.

Conditions:- the outreach/offsite user can run the duplicate database and programs to;-
              - Add new master records (eg customers, products, orders)
              - Perform transactions that add records (usually sales, movements or data collection)
              - produce output as necessary, that MAY change master data accordingly recording the changes
              - Perform queries and lookps of any nature,

              Method:-
Step1. run a procedure to "send" the data. This will simply log the record count of all tables at time of transfer.
Step2. Upon "return" run a procedure for update that will compare the record count and mimic the actions that would have taken place to update the main database for those. NO tables get copied back, data is appended or amended under program control.

Works with DBF tables where all new records are appended in record number order

I heard you the first time Ray!
Your solution is basically the same as mine; Append using the records which have been added or changed. The Replace Existing/Add Unique is the option I chose.

That first part is really what your post is all about.
