Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

You know, I went in and packed everything, compacted the database, and the problem has gone away. I don't know if it was just being ornery or what, but I have restarted it 3 times, and run it through its' paces and it hasn't duplicated the error. If it crops back up I'll post a copy of the db for youto look at, but for now, I am going to chalk it up to gremlins. Thanks!

It sounds like you have something restricting entry into the browse.

Is the browse read only (design mode for the form with the browse, right click on the browse, select properties), is the read only box check at the bottom of the setup tab.

How are you querying the form ( a button, on a form event (OnInit, OnActivate etc). Maybe something in that code is restricting entry.

Can you make a stripped down sample of your app and post it here so we can get a look at what is happening and give possible solutions?

That is exactly what I needed. Perfect! I got my browses working, my updates are working, now for some reason though, whenever I do my search, the update the record in the new form, save and close that form, it goes back to the search screen, which I want it to do, but I can't input any data in the search boxes. I clock on them and they fill with color, no cursor or anything. The only way to get them to work again is to close the form and re-open it. Very strange. I do searches and updates on other forms that aren't as complicated and drawn out as this one, but I don't have this problem on them, and I close all the forms and revert back the exact same way. I don't get it. Still working on it though. Again, thanks for the help with the browses, that's exactly what I needed.

Here is a zip file that demonstrates the use of form.viewqueried() on an embedded browse on a form that calls 1 of three forms based on the acct number in the browse.

Look in the browse events events to see the code.

Normally I would use the OnRowDblClick event to do this but I can understand using buttons as there is no doubt that they want to update.

There is no query, but that should not be on the update button in the browse.

Just read your code again and you are not passing the record number of the row that was clicked to the called form.

Is this an embedded browse on a form, or a stand alone (named) browse.

I had some code here before, I read your code more thoroughly and saw that nothing was being passed to the called form so I revised this post.

You need to pass the record number to the called form - you can use Form.viewqueried() function to call the form and pass the filter to the called form.

Look in the help file for Form.viewqueried().

That should give you what you need instead of Form.view() which does not filter the called table.

    Sort/Update through Browse - Help

Ok, here is the deal. I have a browse, and I do a sort that sorts the browse. I added a column to the browse that has an update button, a nice little trick I didn't know about and found earlier while looking for help with this problem. Anyway, here is my problem. In A5v5, I did a search based on a specific criteria, sorted the records and then displayed the browse with all matching records. The use would then select which row they wanted to update, and then hit an update button on the form that would take them to a new form that had the single record open with all the existing data available to be changed and added to. Overly complicated yes, but it is a lot of data to change, so easier to just make a new form for it. Anyway, when I converted over to v9, everything worked except for one small thing and I can't seem to make it function properly.

On either the update button on the form, or the update button in the browse (which I prefer since it's more obvious which record is to be updated) when I press the button to run the update code, it does everything it's supposed to do, except that when it opens the new form, it is on record #1, not the sorted or queried record. I don't get any code errors, I don't get any wonkiness, it looks like it works, then reverts to a non sorted/queried table. It then opens the form on record #1.

Here is the update code for the button in the browse.

Everything that is not part of the FUNCTION itself (i.e. the button in the browse) is what I copied over from my v5 code that still works perfectly in v5. I click the record, hit update and voila. If anybody can see what I did wrong, or if it's changed any or if something should be different, or even just a good thread to go read that I may have missed, I don't mind figuring it out, just gotten stuck is all. Thanks!
