Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Compare Fields within Record on Query

    Greetings All,

Its been a while since I have been here, but life goes on... I seem to be experiencing a "senior moment" !!

I have a set of huge files that I had to "summarize" which I have done and that much is good.

In a few of the files I selected both the "first" and "last" field item in the summarized file, with the file(s) properly sorted.

What I wanted to do was run a Query on the Resulting Tables and determine
which records did not have the same "First" & "Last" values.

When running a Query I cannot figure out how to use the value of another field in the table as the "compare to" of the first field?

    You can do this, correct?

More details and some sample data would help me understand your situation.

Re: Compare Fields within Record on Query

      Tom,

I did a Summarize Operation and for a few of the fields I grabbed both the First and Last Value for the field, so the result table has 2 fields for this value a,
      First_Value and a Last_Value.

I wanted to do a Query and find out how many records there are that the First_value and Last_Value do not match... I was trying to do this WITHOUT writing any code (xbasic).

It seems that the Query Genie lets you test a field's value against any type of equality "value", but not against another "field's value", or I am missing something, somewhere.... just been awhile since I have been able to play with A5.....

Maybe it's how you're looking at the problem.

Stated differently aren't you trying to query the table for records where the value in the first_value field is not equal to the value in the last_value field?

        If so, then something like

        first_value <> last_value

        may be the ticket.

          Tom,

You are correct in that I am looking for the non-matches...

In the Query Genie, how do I tell it to look at another Field's value
          rather than a literal value?

In the genie dialog where you specify a value use the second option which is 'Specify a value now'. Enter your field name preceded with an equals sign. As per the Tip just below the input control.

You can see the result of this using the the small binocular icon in the lower right of the genie window.

Or use the XY button further down and change to expression builder mode.

              Keith,

check this jing project video I've made for you. To do this with the Query Genie you can use the Expression Builder.

                Tim & Tom,

Thanx for your responses, in this case Tim, you got what I was stuck on, thanx ! For the life of me I could not figure our where/how to get it to reference another field rather than a literal value.

Thanx to both of you !!

                  Tom,

Actually not confusing at all, very nice, simple and to the point.
Yet another way to do it... Tim went about it a different way...
But both solve my problem. Thanx again !!

This is truly the value of this Phorum !!!

                  Thanx,
