Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Conditional Lookups

I have built a few conditional lookups in field rules and I'm confused over the appearance of the drop down selection screens. In most cases, Alpha does a nice, neat job with drop down windows where they only contain the fields I requested and in a small scale. In the case of conditional lookups, the drop down is not a drop down at all, but rather a popup browse table and is huge because it is based on the size of my field lengths.

Can anyone tell me if there are any options here? I know that I can fiddle around with the size of the browse, but it's still a browse view, not a drop down window. I also realize that the user can adjust the size of the browse, but that doesn't help. After all, the drop down is simply intended to be a quick and simple way to make a selection from a screen. Compared to all my other drop downs, the browse view looks horrible.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Tom,

I used the Field Rule's "Filter" in order to shrink Look-up list.

      Re: Conditional Lookups

      Hi John,

I already filter the data so I'm only showing a limited amount.

My problem is not the length of the display but the width, the overall size and the options at the top of the screen, i.e. search, locate, OK. Instead of the user being able to move within the drop down with the keyboard and make a selection by pressing 'CR', the user must use the mouse, locate the OK icon and press it.

In short, what I'm saying is that the drop down appearance of a conditional lookup is very different from a non-conditional lookup; the latter being much more attractive and appropriate for my needs.

        Tom,

        What is the width problem
Can you send a screen shots on your problem?

          Tom,
As far as I can tell in my v9, a field rule conditional lookup does not have the choice of a dropdown....only a popup as you have described.

            Mike,

            I'm afraid you are correct.

Would v10 have any improvements here?

            Thanks,
            Tom

              Re: Conditional Lookups

I do not believe so Tom.....but you can roll your own using a standard combo box I would think using a lookup() or table_external_record_content_get() function as for what fills the combo box......

If you have a sample I will play with it if wanted....

                Re: Conditional Lookups

                Mike,

                I appreciate your help.

What I'm doing is pretty simple as far as the conditional logic is concerned. The user selects from a field called "billing choice" which is a hard coded drop down comprised of two choices: employee or consultant. If the user selects "employee" that table opens and displays two fields. Likewise, if the user selects "consultant" that table opens and displays two fields.

All I'm trying to do is make the selection screen more attractive. Someone else on this forum referred to it as "enormously amateurish" and that describes it pretty well. However, the functionality works fine so I guess this will be one of those cases where form follows function.

                Thanks again.

                Tom

You can create your own saved browse and specify that to be used in the field rules. You can also specify a custom 'Position' and set the width and height.

                    Tim,

What you say is true, but the browse is still a browse, not a true drop down selection. That means the user has to take his hand off the keyboard and move the mouse to make a selection. This might seem trivial ---and it probably is--- but if all the other drop downs on the screen function one way and the conditional lookup functions differently, it makes for discontinuity.

                    Thanks,
                    Tom

                      Tom,
I still do not quite understand what you wish to see....this is my take on it.
You currently have a dropdown for the field Billing_Choice(hopefully not an actual blank in the name), most likely via field rules that has two choices. This is a field on a form that will show the choice that is made (that is how it is designed)...it sounds like you instead want another dropdown to appear and show filtered choices when one of the 2 choices in the Billing_Choice field has been selected.....not gonna happen as what then becomes of the Billing_Choice that was made?

Now if you simply want a separate dropdown to populate as a result of the Billing_Choice dropdown, easily done.

Let me how far off my thinking is!! :)

                        Mike,

You've got it. The billing_choice field dictates the conditional response which fires the conditional lookup.

The entire process works fine. I have zero problems with the functionality. The only issue I have is with the lookup being based on a browse instead of being based on a true drop down selection.

                        Thanks,
                        Tom
