Problem adding blank records

I am trying to add about 700 records to a table. I tried the update operation but it doesn't seem to work for me. Actually, I am trying to create a series of records each with a date in the date field. Am I using the wrong operation?

Don't know of any operation that will do what you want

You could create a small xbasic script in the code editor (in action scripting you would use in-line xbasic) as follows

dim tbl as p
tbl=table.open("your table name here")
tbl.batch_begin()
for i = 1 to 700
tbl.enter_begin(.t.)
	tbl."your field in table here"=date()
tbl.enter_end(.t.)
next i
tbl.batch_end()
tbl.close()

In the above code substitute you table name for "your table name here" and substitute the field in the table that contains the date that you want added for "your field in table here"

I just used the date() function to add a date.

You can put it on a button just create this script in the code tab and then run it from the button using script play.

This is very generic since I don't have enough info to go by from your post as to how you are currently called the "operation"

I guessed that it would be the same date in each record - but could be wrong.

Need more information if the above is not what you want to do.

Thanks for the snippet of code. I actually need to pump in a series of dates that start with the current date and follows through 700 days hence. It has been a few years since I worked with the code and I don't have my dog eared notes and books with me here. I think I can build a date incrementor from this point on.

Here is a variation of the sample code with a begin_date and an incrementing of that date for each record after the first.

dim begin_date as d ={07/25/10}
dim tbl as p
tbl=table.open("your table name here")
tbl.batch_begin()
for i = 1 to 700
tbl.enter_begin(.t.)
	tbl."your table field here"=begin_date
tbl.enter_end(.t.)
begin_date=begin_date+1
next i
tbl.batch_end()
tbl.close()

This will add 700 records to the file start with the begin_date and ending with the date incremented every record until 700 records are reached.

This took a considerable amount of time to populate almost 10 minutes. At first I thought Alpha crashed because the task manager was saying that Alpha was not responding.

Ultimately, I ran the update genie and there was an option to update the records with a series of dates.

BTW, I just added another column containing a calculated value (integer) that determines the day of the week. I used the DOW function. The expression builder calculates the proper value but this is not reflected in the new column. I tried reindexing to no avail. Is there a way to refresh the calculated fields?

How did you calculate the new field with DOW. Did you use an update operation or did you use the field rules to create a calcualted field.

If you used an operation and the calculated field did not update the fields, something was wrong with the devleopment of the operation.

If you used field rules to create the calculated field, then you can open the field rules for the table and in the menu at the top, there is a item called "Rules" If you click on that there is an called re-evalute field rules. Click on that and that will recalc the field but only if you have used field rules to create the calculation for the new field.

I am also curious as to how you entered the 700+ new records into the table and why it took you 10 minutes. When I used the code that I posted, I entered 700 records with incremental dates in about 2 seconds if not shorter. ( I am guessing that the dates were not increment by one day for each record but were based on a week of dates (some days skipped like Saturday and Sunday and Holidays). Just curious.
