Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Email_send() doesn't work on one customer's system.

I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this or found a solution.

My customer is using gmail's POP settings and it has been working for a couple years. He recently bought a new computer and now we can't get it to work. Every time he tries to send using email_client() he gets a "could not connect to smtp server" error.

    - I verified that he does have a connection to the internet.
    - I turned off his anti-virus and firewall. (only for testing - it's back on now)
    - I know that his email address and password are correct.
    - Gmail allows smtp with either SSL or TLS on ports 465 or 587 and I tried all combinations of those. (I think it's actually SSL on 465 or TLS on 587 but I'm not sure so I tried them all.)
    - I even tried putting my own email info into his computer. It works on my system but not his - so I know the settings were right.

(Originally his A5 was simply "locking up" and had to be shut down after about 1 minute. I'm not sure what fixed that but now he is only getting the "could not connect to smtp server" error.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like he needs to re-download alpha and start over. Smell of more trouble to come down the road, first locking, now email with no logical explanation..

I'm convinced that there is a setting somewhere in Windows that is stopping A5 from connecting with SMTP servers.

As chance would have it, another customer just called to remind me that they have had the same problem for quite awhile. And I know I've seen this problem on other systems.

I have now entered the e-mail settings from both customers on my own computer and both of them work fine from my computer; i.e., their settings are correct. I also have other customers using the same application and they can send from their systems. The customer that called today has re-installed my program and that didn't fix the problem.

Later today (I hope) I'm going to go into my customer's Internet Explorer and try to remove all security and see what happens. It's the only other thing I can think of.

Do they have Outlook Express or another email client that does work through the SMTP?

Have them send email to something other than gmail and see.
              gmail is very forgiving though.

                Cal,
Are you using the new gmail function? I remember a problem with any gmail being sent. Alpha created a new function just for that in v10...but it may work in v9 as well????

                http://support.alphasoftware.com/Wha...0/NewInV10.htm

                Code:
                [B]Email_send_gmail() function[/B]

Allows you to send e-mail using the Gmail SMTP server
                 Syntax:
                 L result = email_send_gmail(C gmail_email_address ,C gmail_email_password ,C to ,C from ,C subject ,C html_body ,C text_body [,C cc [,C bcc [,C attachments ]]])"

One customer does, the other doesn't.

Maybe GMail is forgiving but not A5.

I was wrong about it working on my system. I had accidently mixed up which profile I was using and was actually sending through another profile.

This issue sounded awfully familiar so I finally did what I should have done in the first place - ran some searches and found this and this and one of those has a few posts from yours truly. It turns out that v9 doesn't like GMail for some reason. It works in v10 but not in v9. I moved from v7 to v9 because of some other e-mail issues and now it looks like I will be forced to move to v10 because of e-mail problems. I'm beginning to hate dealing with e-mail in A5 so I hope it is all working in v10 now.

(After thinking about this more, I think I even wrote my own e-mail routine - the stuff that shows the To, CC, BCC, Subject, Attachments, and Text - at one time as a workaround for some A5 e-mail issue. I believe there was one e-mail method that worked but it didn't allow the user to interface with it directly so I had to create my own dialog to get the e-mail info then pass it to the other function (email_send2?). Unfortunately, my memory isn't good enough - if I did it, I can't find it now.

Oh, man! Here we go again. Alpha has made it "easy" to send via Gmail with this function. (I tested it and, yes, it works.) However, they've actually made the "easy" process much harder than the old method. Now you have to go through the very difficult process of building your own xdialog to get the email contents - i.e., all the arguments to the function. The email_client() and email_client_auto() functions already had that built in for you.

I simply created a profile in my A5 mail system with the correct gmail settings and used the old email_client_auto() and it works just fine AND it even shows an email window to enter all that stuff into. You can give it arguments to pre-fill the fields but the user can edit it any way he wants. All without building your own special xdialog and the associated routines to check for a missing or valid e-mail address, a missing subject, missing message, etc.

The appropriate Gmail settings (from the registry) are:
                    client_hostname - smtp.gmail.com
                    client_identity - <your full gmail email address>
                    client_password - <your gmail password>
                    client_username - <your full gmail email address>
formatted_send_option - 4 (prompt each time I send email - this may have nothing to do with Gmail, I really don't know.)
                    mail_hostname - pop.gmail.com
nSMTPAuthSelection# - 2 (same settings as incoming mail server)
pop_first! - 0 (this is set when using the A5 dialog to set the "AuthSelection" above but if you create a routine to set it up via xbasic you will need to do it yourself)
                    pop_port# - 995
                    POPSecureConnectionType - SSL
                    smtp_password - <your gmail password>
                    smtp_port# - 587
                    smtp_username - <your full gmail email address>
                    SMTPSecureConnectionType - TLS

Edit: It looks to me like email_send_gmail() is just a way of sending via gmail without setting up a gmail profile.

Edit again: I just noticed that Alpha says the SMTPSecureConnectonType should be SSL and the SMTP_port# should be 465. From reading the info on the Gmail site, it seems that either SSL/465 or TLS/587 will work. I used TLS/587 and it worked for me.

By the way, Mike, thanks for telling me about that function. I didn't know it existed.

No, it doesn't work in v9 - I tried it.

I sort of kinda remembered that there was a problem with gmail, but didn't quite remember all the details as I only use gmail when receiving large attachments.

Rather than shopping for other clients, that is email clients, why not use alpha's? That's of course unless the recipients don't have alpha.
