Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Thanks, Garry.

I tried that but this particular site behaves differently. It contains javascripting statements that seem to be constructing the page dynamically. I'm not able to retrieve the text of the full page, even using blob variables and memo fields.

Write a for loop and keep adding characters to and watch the output. At somewhere over 1000 characters the no matter what you add it does not get added. Then do it for a variable of type b.
I capture data from web sites regularly with a number of functions based on http_post_page2(), in pseudo code:

    dim bData as b
    bData = http_post2()

and then write bdata to a memo field, which does contain the returned string as you would see if you look at the source of the returned page browser page. Then because it is easy to see the returned data you can find what you are interested in.

    Hi, Garry.

I don't think there's a 1024 length limit on character variables, and I'm not sure binary data can be stored in a memo field or saved to a text file with Save_to_file(). Guess I'm a bit confused. Are you suggesting that http_get_page2() can return binary data instead of character data?

If the return information is more than 1024 in length (or some number near that), then it is type blob, not type character.
Did you dim ss as c? You must dim ss as blob.

    Re: http_get_page2

    Interesting ideas.

I was trying to save the string as a text file and it does not include the whole source. I assumed the string returned by the function wasn't complete. Maybe it's complete but then gets truncated when saved to file (with Alpha's Save_to_file() function)?

    Later...

Saving the string returned by the Fn to a memo field does not help. The source from the web page is truncated the same way that happens using the Save_to_file() Fn. Suggests that something in the web page is confusing http_get_page2()

    Tom,
I recommend you write ss to a memo field in a table and then look at it there. I had more success this way and have certainly observed that what gets written to the table is much more info than you often get in Interactive Window.

There appear to be either one of two or both things going on here:
a-Either alpha is giving you the short shrift.
I'd report as a bug. It doesn't work as advertised.
A page is a page, not a skeleton not a schematic representation.
To confirm, I tried it with other pages. Same result.

    Or:

b-There is a limitation to how much you could feed the IW at one time.
I could confirm the second. This seems to be the case, but I would report the first as a bug.

    started a topic http_get_page2

    http_get_page2

I don't seem to be able to capture the entire source so I'm wondering if anyone can explain why, and offer suggestions for getting the entire html source text.

    Here's what is failing:

    Code:
    ss = http_get_page2("http://www.cmegroup.com/trading/commodities/reports/cheese.html")
This retrieves a small portion of the entire source, but only the first little bit.

If you visit the website ini your browser and then let your browser display the source you can see there's much much more than this function is returning.

    What's going on?

    Thanks.
