Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Question about possibility of using sub records

    Hi there,

I wrote in a previous post about a membership table and getting ideas on how to create it..I didn't hear back from anyone so I am guessing it was a bit confusing....so I have tried to do a bit of it myself.

I have got to where I was stuck and now I am clearer in my mind what the crux of my issue...hopefully my point may be made clearer it would come out here.

As in the previous post, I am designing a database that is tracking payments made by members for their kid(s) or subscribe to a newletter. A member can either pay an individual subscription for one kid or they can pay a family pass ( a flat rate fee).

What I need is to have something like a form and I can select 'child' records when I have selected an option for Family records. I can then create a payment report showing all the members and who they are paying for.

How would I create the 'child' record in Alpha Five on a table level?

I hope this makes sense, and someone is able to help me with this issue. If I am unclear, please ask me I will be more than happy to clarify matters.

    TIA

    Wei-Ye,

It's not clear from your post whether you're asking for general database design help, or if you've got a specific design in mind and don't know how to implement it in Alpha Five.

Can't speak for others, but I could understand you better if you drew pictures of the forms you have in mind, explaining how you want them to work.

Re: Question about possibility of using sub records

      Hi Tom,
Thanks for the reply. It is most appreciated as I can now explain what I mean.

In regards to your first question I am unsure how I would implement what I want in Alpha Five.
I have attached a drawing of a concept of what I am after for one drawing I am after. Basically what I would like is to have the user choose between the three entries of “type of subscription”. They can only choose 1 of the 3 not any more. There are different dollar values attached to the subscriptions
      • $10 for subscription (supposed to be “newsletter only subscription)
      • $25 for individual
      • $65 for family
This will allow me to do the reporting of who has paid or not and how much money that the club has in its coffers and any outstanding debt. The box below the subscription types shows the family members that are with this record should the member has a family membership.
An additional complexity is that the members will also includes kids and parents.
The thing that I am finding difficult is how to portray this in a table...as far as the membership goes
I hope that this makes sense to you as to what I am after and I am grateful for any help.

      Tanman

PS. Please excuse my scrawl! I thought it would be easier to draw it out and attach it.

          Hi, Tanman,

Yes, the image helps a lot.

There are probably lots of ways to approach a good design for your app. If you havent' explored the AlphaSports sample database or the Membership template (both of which ship with Alpha Five) then you might find them very useful. Certainly they'll give you some ideas.

Concerning the design it seems to me that you need an easy way to distinguish which members are financially responsible for the fees and which are being covered by someone else. Calling them all "members" tends to obscure the distinction. You might want to develop different categories of membership. Here are few that come quickly to mind:

          Sponsor (they pay)
Sponsored (they are paid for by someone else)
          Guest (they don't pay)

I would probably use two tables. In the first I'd store the information for each sponsor in a separate record. Each sponsor would get a unique membership number or id. I'd use a second table to store information about folks the sponsor is paying for. Each "sponsored" person would be stored in a separate record, linked to the "sponsor" through the sponsor's id.

Thanks for the reply. I will give that a go and let it be known what becomes of it :).

Thanks for putting me on the right path.
