Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Searching records by Date

    HI

I am wondering if or what methods can be used in Alpha to pull the latest 'Job' from a table for a given customer where there are many instances of jobs for that same customer. Records will not only be pulled by latest date but also by other fields too. In Access I can use the MAX() function in a Query and as long as I include the Customer ID etc then it will return the Latest Record in the Jobs table for that customer.

Does Alpha have a similiar function please?

    Thanks for your help

    Mike

      Re: Searching records by Date

HI and thanks for the reply. I had a bit of a read on LookupD() and it looks like a function to pull a date from another table in a query as far as I can tell? I may be incorrect as I was just reading briefly from Susan Bush's A5 Functions book. I thought you would have to specify a date with that, as opposed to just 'asking' for the latest date?

      Cheers

        Mike

Take a look at these two functions

        Tablemax()

        http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/TABLEMAX+Function

        Dbmax()

        http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/DBMAX+Function

difference is that Dbmax() requires an index -

Tablemax() does not just a table filter and the field data to return

          Re: Searching records by Date

          Thanks Tom

The Tablemax() looks like it may do the job, I'll just have to check that it does not require a specific Date to look for.

i.e. in the example on the link you posted it uses for an example:
          tablemax("PURCHASE.DBF", ".T.", "COST") -> 18500.00

Which I guess is searching for values in the COST field of greater than 18500.
So I'll have to see if something like:

          Tablemax("Jobs.dbf", ".T.", "Date")

works. Then combine it within a loop so that it looks through the table and first finds the latest job on each item of equipment where the field 'Full_Test_Done' is True. Then print out a report basically showing what items are over 12 months since their last full test.

          Cheers

            Re: Searching records by Date

Mike, if you find performance slows unacceptably consider writing a custom function. Tablemax will open, filter, fetch, retrieve, and close each time it's called. Depending on the size of the table and the responsiveness of your network this sequence may be pretty slow.

Thanks Tom it is a pretty big table so I'll see how I go and come back here if I need more help.

                Mike,
I would use a set with Customer as parent and Orders as child.
Child would be sort by invert(cdate(documentdate))
On my form I would add a small browse just with a few childrecords.
If wanted you can add another browse sorted on another item e.g. invert(jobnr) or so.
When you retrieve the customer, you see at a glance his history.
                My 2 cents
Most things are simple but unfortunately only after the first time

                  Hi Ton

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I dont quite follow you yet. I keep coming back to A5 to try and learn it, get frustrated, carry on with access, look at what I have done in A5 (which I like the appearance of more than anything else!!) etc.

I do not have an Orders table to do a Set with? Also what do you mean by invert? Turn upside down or switch? I have tables for Customers, Jobs, Equipment, Equipment Type, Job Type, etc.

Thanks for your time all the same.

We call that the learning curve. We all followed that track. So go on!

I do not have an Orders table to do a Set with? Also what do you mean by invert? Turn upside down or switch? I have tables for Customers, Jobs, Equipment, Equipment Type, Job Type, etc.
In a nutshell I repeat my idea and hope its more clear to you.
As I suppose that jobs have a relation with custumers, Try to find out how to make a set on the Customers table as parent with the Jobstable as child.
If you make an index for the Jobstable take the datefield and sort it in decending order. (=last date is first).
See attachment: Childsettings in the Set
Open the default form of that Set and you will see custumer data and also a browse with jobinfo sorted
You can customize that form and save it with a smaller browse by deleting the fields out of the browse (NOT out of the table) and depending of the space you have/need limit the number of rows.
Result must be that when you retrieve the customer, you see at a glance on a few lines the newest history.
See attachment: Customerform with a browse. where donateur = customer and documentfieldname can be your Jobfieldname.

Mike, give it a try if this is what you need/can use (but Backup1 Backup2 Backup3 Backup4 and testenvironment)!

                    Good luck

                    Ton

                      Hi Ton

Thanks for your help aand the example files. Sorry I have not replied earlier I did not receive an email that there were any more replies so I have not visited back to the message board until today. I will try as you suggest and see how I go. Yes there is a customers table.
Just so I give the clearest idea as to what I am doing. There is the jobs table with many jobs for each item of equipment. Some of those jobs will be "Full_Test_Done" = .T.

So every item Must have at least one Full Test per year. So I want to prepare a report so that a list will be printed of when the last 'Full Test' was done on each item. So need to look through all jobs, look at each item of equipment and see if and when there was the Full Test Done and get the most recent then add that to the report.

The report will have Equipment Number of the item, description of the item, what department it belongs to and when the last Full Test done, and when nest due.

                      Cheers
                      Mike
