Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tablesum() again!

    I have read several previous threads on the subject of Tablesum syntax but still find it very confusing. It's the filter bit that throws me.
    I have a table (Crops) that lists the different crops that I grow. I have a table (Contracts) that lists the different contracts I have signed for the sale of those crops. The tables are linked by cropname in a one to many join (a contract can be for only one crop but one crop could be in several contracts). I have a form based on Crops with an embedded browse showing a list of contracts in place for each crop. So far so good. I now need to total the contract quantities for each crop on this form.
    I have tried the Total option but this throws odd results, I think because this is intended more for reports. So Tablesum it is. If only I could understand the syntax.
    This will be very simple for most of you I'm sure, but it's driving me mad!

    Re: Tablesum() again!

    I would go back to the Total() function. Probably create a calculated field on the form (not in the table) that looks something like this:

    ttl_qty = total( Contracts->Qty, GRP->Crops )

    That's the way I've done it many times and never had a problem. However, getting the syntax right is critical and sometimes I've had to try a couple different methods before getting it right.

    FYI: The reference to the "Contracts->" table is required because the field is in the child table. Otherwise it tries to find a field by that name in the parent table. If it doesn't exist you will get an error message. If it does exist, you will get the wrong total - I believe it would be the total of the parent value times the number of child records rather than the total of the values in the child records.

      Re: Tablesum() again!

      I am having similar problems with the syntax for the LOOKUPC() function - I think the Helpfile supplied with Alpha Five could do with a bit of extra information adding for some of these more complex functions and some more Examples perhaps.

      Does anyone on here know if the help file has been improved for the latest version of Alpha is it 10.5 now? I have refrained from upgrading this time around and stayed with ver 9, but a better help file would be very useful to people with my level of Alpha Five programming knowledge!

        Hi Cal, I get this, but I have a little twist. I need to have a field that shows the total of "TTLHrs" but only from the same paydate. It has been a while, but I am trying to get back into the role..;)

          Base your form on a set with Crops linked one to many to Contracts then
          Try this:

          total(contracts->quantity,GRP->crops,GRP->contracts)

            I should have told you to make a calculated field called qt_total or something to that affect,
            so that
            qt_total = total(contracts->quantity,GRP->crops,GRP->contracts)

            to put on your form

              Never knew you could double Grp->
              I've been looking for this fix in a report calc field and here's what I ended up with.
              qty_mail_Gc = total(Keys->Qty,grp->Source,GRP->Key) Sub total of keys mailed by source.
              qty_mail_GG = total(Keys->Qty,grp->Grand,GRP->Key) Report total

              Thanks Cal, Garry!
