Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Slow Query

    Hi

    i have a form that lists in a browse all current appointments.

    i have a button defined so you can click on the appointment to open the details.

    this works fine until you get to about 10,000 records and then it starts to go fairly slow to open the form. You can see at the bottom of the screen the database going through all the records to get to the say 10,000th records.

    this is the code..

    Is there a way to speed this up?

    FUNCTION AID_ButtonClick AS V ( event AS C, data AS C , row AS N )
    'DESCRIPTION: Fired when a button is clicked on a column.
    'Arguments: event - the name of the event that is fired
    ' data - the data in the column cell
    ' row - the row number in the browse
    'this.SetViewport_Row() sets the current row to the row with the button that was clicked.
    this.Set_Viewport_row(row)
    Frm = form.load("Frm_newappointments")
    Frm.QueryRun("tbl_appointment->Aid = '" + data + "'", "")
    vChange = .t.
    Frm.Show()
    Frm.Activate()

    END FUNCTION

    Thanks

    Re: Slow Query

    Do you have a permanent index for the "appointment" table that indexes the table based on the field that's displayed in your column?

      hi Tom

      yes i think so... see attached . AID is the field that is selected.

        Re: Slow Query

        I don't know if the "unique only" parameter is getting in the way. Try creating a new (additional) index on the AID field, giving it a different name, and not limiting it to "unique only".

          Re: Slow Query

          tried that already and makes no difference. It goes through record numbers as it finds the one it wants rather than the AID.
          But i have tried setting the rec number index in descending order, but makes no difference. the problem is worse that the database is sitting on a shared pc on the network.

            Re: Slow Query

            Is the called form based only on the appointments table?

            Does the called form have its own filter / query / order specifications?

            Does your permanent index use the entire field width or the trimmed values in the aid field?
            In order for LQO to work the index tag spec must match, exactly, the query being run in the form

              Re: Slow Query

              The form is based on a set.. attached image..

              When the form is opened it is oped for appts for a certain date.

              They are complete fields and not trimmed.

              Thanks

                Re: Slow Query

                I can't explain the results you're getting.

                Suggest you try a different strategy. Instead of querying the big table for a single record, use code that does a form find by key and then restrict navigation and enters in the called form. See help file discussion of <object>.find()
