Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    installing runtime application

I made a runtime application and it seemed to load fine, but when I started it, it came back with the errors (zlib.dll missing, dzip32.dll missing, spell32.dll missing) so I went to the internet and downloaded them and the messages went away but then it just flash when it starts and then stops. It never asks for the runtime lic. number or starts the program.

    Re: installing runtime application

    Hi Kerry,

On my XP PRO windows system, I don't have zlib.dll. The other 2 .dll are in my Alpha runtime folders.

How are you starting the runtime application? This could be the key to the problem?

If it runs from the development copy of Alpha it should run fine in runtime.

      Ed thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure I know what the difference is. I'm using the create installation package in the tools-utilities menu.

I'm trying to package the runtime program and my application together for installation on another computer. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but I just can't see what it is.

      Thanks

        Hi Kerry,

Sorry I did not get back to you sooner.

Did you get your application going OK?

No, I'm new at this so I was wondering if it had something to do with the lic. Do you have to put it in Alphafive to be recognize by the runtime program. I have never used my unlimited lic.

          Thanks for any help.

                Re: installing runtime application

                Hi Kerry,

Do this. In Windows go to my computer. On the C: drive go to Program Files. Double click on A5v9runtime folder. Inside the folder you will see the Alpha5 green Icon. Double click on it, and the runtime will open up. If you have not already inserted the license number enter it when asked to do so. After you put in the license number, the runtime on this machine will be OK. From there, you can set up your application manually if that is OK.

I tried that but it never asks for a license number. It starts ok and go to the alpha five window. When I try to open my application it gives me the message "Alpha Five is not licensed for the operating system. Contact Alpha Software for upgrade information" and quits.

                    Re: installing runtime application

If the PC you have installed on is Windows Vista or Windows 7 try changing the compatability settings. I have had a similar message on those.

You can do this by right clicking on the application shortcut or the Start Menu icon. I have used a few compatability settings, but try Windows XP SP3 and if that doesnt work try some of the others listed.

I just needed the runtime update, which I never got, I also find where they keep the lic. key using regidt that that was in another thead. If I wasn't such a novist at this It pobably wouldn't have taken so long.

                          Thanks again.
