Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    file.unzip() vs. unzip_files()

    I think I must be missing something here. How does
    Code:
    file.unzip("c:\backup.zip", "*.*", "c:\temp")
    differ from
    Code:
    unzip_files("c:\backup.zip", "*.*", "c:\temp")
    and when would you use one vs. the other?

    Re: file.unzip() vs. unzip_files()

    UNZIP_FILES() extracts files from Zipfile_Name, that match the Mask specification, to the Destination_Folder. The function is a high level wrapper around the FILE.UNZIP()method.
    There can be only one.

      Stan --

      Thanks for your response. I believe both code samples should extract all files in Zipfile_Name to the Destination_Folder. While Alpha's documentation says the function is a high level wrapper around the method, I don't understand how they differ from a usage standpoint. Don't they both do the same thing?

      Can you (or someone) help me understand the difference? Thanks.

        Re: file.unzip() vs. unzip_files()

        The reason I posted this question is that I encountered a problem where
        Code:
        file.unzip("c:\backup.zip", "*.*", "c:\temp")
        would not unzip all the files in a backup.zip file that was a little over 6 meg. I coded a work-around to extract the individual file names and then unzip them one at a time, but in so doing -- guess what? -- I discovered another command that appears to do the same thing as the first two in the previous post.

        Code:
        UNZIP_FILELIST( "c:\backup.zip", "", "c:\temp")
        I haven't tested this, but isn't it equivalent to the other two? Does anyone know of any differences between these? Does anyone know which is the recommended one to use?

          Stan,

          ...high level wrapper.......
          Please pardon my ignorance. In all these years of seeing this, I really never have understood what it means. Does it mean the wrapper just contains another function that it runs???
          Thanks for any clarification.

            Re: file.unzip() vs. unzip_files()

            By no means authority but I believe the answer is yes.

            Code:
            UNZIP_FILES( Zipfile_Name as C [, Mask as C [, Destination_Folder as C [, Preserve_Paths as L ]]] )
            The advantage of this function over

            Code:
            Result_Flag as L = FILE.UNZIP( Zip_Filename as C, Mask as C, Output_Directory as C  )
            seems to be the inclusion of the preserve_paths parameter.

            Suppose you were coding the unzip_files() function and found that the code in the file.unzip() method could have accepted the Preserve_Paths parameter but that it wasn't implemented (probably set a default for this in the original code). Makes sense to just create the new function by wrapping it in code to feed the Preserve_Paths parameter to the underlying code.
            There can be only one.
