Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Yes, what MikeC said. And to get lookups for field entry you end up with field rules, and I try and stay away from them as much as possible too.

    Re: Skip does not work

    Marc,
    I'm not the Mike you asked, but there are probably several reasons not to use a browse for data entry; the one that comes to mind right away is control over a user entering data---much less or harder to code in a browse than a modal form or xdialog.

    I'm curious though.....if you are going to use the browse as you planned, did you try my method of skipping the field in question as my example shows?

    Re: Skip does not work

    Thanks,

    But Mike, What kind of bug (other than this one : ) ) can we get using a Browse as a data entry method? Why your "NEVER"?

    Good point returning to the surrounding form for more precision.

    By the way, the skipping behavior sometime works right away and sometimes not. I don't know what enables it. like being in a field, trying to type something somewhere, etc.

    Thanks.

    Or you could do the more robust approach and NOT enter data into a browse (which I NEVER do) and instead do it through a dialog, which you can control thoroughly.

    Re: Skip does not work

    here ya go...something that does what you want as a work-around...I used an older MP3 example I had created in v8. The .commit() seemed necessary to advance the field even though the Group field is read only....perhaps other ways but I stopped once I got it to work! :)

    I used the OnTimer event with this script.
    Code:
    dim ob_active as C
    ob_active= :f_MP3:Browse1.active()

    if ob_active="Group"
       topparent.commit()
       topparent:Browse1:Album.activate()
    end if

    Re: Skip does not work

    Yah. I want to avoid that column so data entry is straight forward to fields where we need to enter stuff. In my case, I have a title ID to enter by its number. The next column is the title in its text form but is read only. So I want to forward the user to the next column.

    Thanks for fast reply.

    Re: Skip does not work

    I do not believe what is being asked for is possible. The cursor entering a field in an embedded browse does not trigger any specific event. There are several field/object change events that can be keyed upon, as MikeC wrote, but simply the cursor entering the browse field.

    Marc,
    Not exactly certain what you are trying to accomplish. Are you trying to have the cursor move to the next consecutive field (column) when the cursor arrives on a field column) in a Browse? Is that it?

    Re: Skip does not work

    Marc,
    The field rule "Skip" is just a way to make the field always read only...nothing more that I know of.

    When you say
    I would like in a browse that when we enter a field, it jumbs to the cell next right to it.
    I do not think you really mean this....why would you want to enter into a field and have it jump to another right away!? If so then use the OnArrive of the field and redirect (activate()) the next field.

    Or do you mean that after an entry is made you want it to go to another field? If so you there are various ways dependent upon what you actually want....if say the field will always be a certain number of characters then you could count them (with len()) and then activate the next field wanted.....

    A bit confused on the second question....are you talking about the browse events "Events"? These are somewhat documented in the "What's New in v8". I use the OnChange event often.....They are used with xbasic and the syntax is basically to use the field name (column) as a prefix to _OnChange. Such as

    Code:
    FUNCTION YourFieldName_OnChange AS V ()

    if topparent:browse1:YourFieldName.value<0
        msgbox("You cannot enter a negative value for the YourFieldName field...please correct this!")
    cancel()
    end if

    END FUNCTION

    Skip does not work

    Hi there,

    Even if I put .T. in a field Skip rule in table rules,
    It makes no difference.

    I would like in a browse that when we enter a field, it jumbs to the cell next right to it.

    So, related to the skip problem, if I try to put some events in the browse, Iright clic the column header, select the object (here the 'Title' that is a read only description of a user entered title ID. But the dropdown "Select Event..." has nothing in its list. I do not know how to use it. Do we need to define that event somewhere else before?

    I am interested in putting events anyway, but if there is another way to implement a skip other than sending a keyboard message 'enter', I am open to any suggestion.

    ---
    Still not fixed but here is one more detail:

    If I try to change the Title by typing a letter in the field, then the behavior of skipping the skip columns is activated! (Such as Title and the record's sequential ID. But I need to do this in order to get the right behavior?

    Is there a known workaround for that bug?

    I am in version 9

    Thanks.
