Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Set Browse issue

I am in the process of converting an application form v4.5 to v9. I am have a problem with a Set browse. there is a parent table with 4 children. all the children are one-one..on one of the tables I have RI set and as I enter a number in the browse in the field of the child table with RI set to follow changes and new record should be created in the child if one does not exist, or it used to in 4.5..sometimes the record is created and other times I have retype the value in the field.the linking fields are the same types etc..any insight or is any further explanation necessary for assistance..thanks to all in advance..

    Hi Jim,

What result do you get when you use a form instead of a browse?

      Keith ,

thanks for replying, on initial tries it appears not to be a problem if i use the default form for that set..

          Jim,
as I enter a number in the browse in the field of the child table with RI set to follow changes and new record should be created in the child if one does not exist,
This makes no sense to me. If you are entering values into the child, then by inference and default, a record is created, right. And there will only be one child record for the in focus parent record, so why would you have a browse for a child linked 1:1 to a parent?

thanks mike, i will try to make sense of what is going on.The parent table is a list of textbooks and enrollment for each textbook, this is a table i order books from to supply our store..the 4 child tables reflect 4 book wholesalers from whom i order the books, books are added on a daily basis to my orders so i update each child table daily..as books are added to an order at a particular wholesaler i would than enter the amount in the field of the set browse for the child table of that particular wholesaler thus creating a record in the child for that isbn(linking field). Here is my problem,as you observe"then by inference and default, a record is created, right", that is not always the case, sometime I enter a value in the field and either Press enter or F9 and the value I entered just disappears and no child is created..is this explanation helpful to understand my issue?

Yes, it is helpful. But I need more clarification, or verification that I undertand correctly.

So you have 4 tables, one for each of 4 book wholesalers. These are the 4 children to the Books parent. That make one table exclusive to one wholesaler, correct? Are the fields in these 4 tables all the same?

                Re: Set Browse issue

that is correct, the tables are not identical ,however similar and the field that links them to the Parent are identical(isbn), 3 out of 4 wholesalers provide data so I can update the child tables directly(not hand entering) , so 1 wholesaler replies in such a way that i hand enter the info and is easiest to do so in set browse and also there are shortages etc that occasionally requires making changes as mentioned this Set Browse worked with no issue in v4.5..thanks again
