Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • False duplicates in Set

    Hi - I have established a 3-level set as follows ...

    A Job has Sections (and Subsections - all at the same level) - A Section / Subsection in turn has 'Estimates' - line items.

    My set has a 1->Many link Jobs -> Sections.

    Also, a 1->Many link Sections-> Estimates.

    I have a form which features three browses, each on it's own tab = showing first Jobs, then Sections (per job), then Estimates (per section)

    The Jobs browse (Browse1) works fine. However, I can see multiple section lines shown in Browse 2 (Sections) whenever that particular section features multiple Estimate records (Browse3).

    I've checked the Sections file - there are no actual duplicate records - it just appears so in the Browse.

    I have packed, re-indexed and de-duplicated all three files just in case.

    This is bound to be someting simple e.g. in the way I've constructed the set - but for the life of me I can't find out what !

    For info - please see two set definitions, and the browse showing duplicates.

    Sections->IndexnoNo is a composite of Jobno+SectionNo+SubSectionNo

    Estimates->EstIndexno is a composite of the Indexno inherited from the Sections file, plus a product 'UniqueID' plus the Record Number

    Your help gratefully received .. !

    Cheers Jem

    Re: False duplicates in Set

    Check the default browse for the set. What you see there is what you will find in any browse built on the set. For each child record you will have one parent record. For each grandchild record you will have one grandparent record.

    It may be that you need one or more sets with sections and subsections as the parent and estimates as the child to display what you want to view.
    There can be only one.

      Did you by any chance base browse2 on the jobs table (parent) and then add the Section fields to it.?

        Hi Stan and Tim,

        Thanks for your suggestions.

        Tim - I didn't base Table 2 on the Jobs (parent file) - but I can try re-establishing it from scratch.

        Stan - I'll give the two-stage approach a go and come back to you.

        Cheers Jem

            Ok - That was really easy ! ... and I'm in awe of your ability to spot the potential problem areas :)

            Taking the line of least resistance, I deleted my Sections Browse (2) - then simply re-inserted it as an embedded browse. All works ok. I'm not entirely sure of the sequence of events that led to this browse confusing the issue, but it's certainly a trick I'll store in my kit bag.

            Thanks both !
