Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    file.copy2 extension problem

    our users copy documents form from their local pc to our server using file_copy2 function.

    i cant use the name the users have given to their documents
    so i have designed the script so that the document gets renamed as it is copied to meet our compliance requirements.

    i have this working fine but because i have specified what the document will be called i also specified the file extension.

    so at present i can only get my users to upload .pdf to our server.

    i did think about trimming the last 4 characters from the field which holds the path of the document to be copied and put this in a variable and then replace the hard coded .pdf with this variable.

    firstly i couldnt find how to trim the last 4 characters and secondly some of our documents are delivered to us in .html so i would need to trim 4 or 5 characters.

    or is their another way to identify the document type to be copied and apply the file exension to the renamed document.

    here is the code
    Code:
    'get document to be uploaded to server
    dim vdsupload as c

    vdsupload = alltrim(target->doc_browse)

    'dim variables for valaues from document store form

    dim GLOBAL vdsfileloc as c
    dim GLOBAL vdsclient as c
    dim GLOBAL vdscaseref as c

    'create document path for document to be saved to
    dim vdsdocpath as c

    vdsdocpath = trim(vdsfileloc)+"\\"+trim(vdsclient)+trim(vdscaseref)

    ' create variables for trimmed values from current form to be used in the document name
    dim vdscat as c
    dim vdsprov as c
    dim vdsdocname as c

    vdscat = alltrim(target->doc_cat)
    vdsprov = alltrim(target->doc_provider)
    vdsdocname = alltrim(target->targetname)

    ' now create full document name
    dim vdsdoc as c

    vdsdoc = vdscat+ " " +vdsprov+ " " +vdsdocname+" "+dtoc(date(),"1-")+".pdf"

    ' now create full drive path and document name and save to specified location
    file.copy2(vdsupload,vdsdocpath+"\\"+vdsdoc)

    'Set 'Value' property of 'Target' in Form 'Document_Add' .

    parentform:Target.value = vdsdocpath+"\\"+vdsdoc
    thanks

    Get any part you need.

    Code:
    fname_whole = "P:\executive\Mpurch\data\domefile.pdf"
    ? fname
    = "P:\executive\Mpurch\data\domefile.pdf"

    fname_name =  file.filename_parse(fname,"N")
    ? fname_name
    = "domefile"

    fname_path = file.filename_parse(fname,"P")
    ? fname_path
    = "\executive\Mpurch\data\"

    fname_drive = file.filename_parse(fname,"D")
    ? fname_drive
    = "P:"

    fname_ext = file.filename_parse(fname,"E")
    ? fname_ext
    = ".pdf"
    There can be only one.

      Re: file.copy2 extension problem

      The method suggested by Stan is good but fails when there's a period in the filename--something we wouldn't ever do but users often will. I've successfully been using this instead to get the extension:

      Code:
      dim ext as C
      ext=*reverse(substr(*reverse(["UserFilename"]),1,4))
      	if ext = "jpeg" then
      	    ext = ".jpeg"
      	end if
      	if ext = "docm" then
      	   ext = ".docm"
      	end if
      	if ext = "docx" then
      	   ext = ".docx"
      	end if
      	if ext = "pptx" then
      	    ext = ".pptx"
      	end if
      	if ext = "xlsx" then
      	    ext = ".xlsx"
      	end if
      	if ext = "html" then
      	    ext = ".html"
      	end if

        Fails how?

        Code:
        fname_whole = "P:\executive\Mpurch\data\dome.file.pdf"
        ? fname_whole
        = "P:\executive\Mpurch\data\dome.file.pdf"

        fname_name =  file.filename_parse(fname_whole,"N")
        ? fname_name
        = "dome.file"

        fname_path = file.filename_parse(fname_whole,"P")
        ? fname_path
        = "\executive\Mpurch\data\"

        fname_drive = file.filename_parse(fname_whole,"D")
        ? fname_drive
        = "P:"

        fname_ext = file.filename_parse(fname_whole,"E")
        ? fname_ext
        = ".pdf"
        There can be only one.

          Re: file.copy2 extension problem

          FWIW: (not much unless you are doing something in a large loop)

          This runs 6 times faster than file.filename_parse():

          extension = substr( filename, atc( ".", filename, -1 ) )

          Just remember that either method assumes that anything after the last period is an extension. This may or may not be true! A file can be created with no extension.

          HINT: Whenever you have to do something in a loop and are using a "flexible" function - one that can make choices or allows you to do things in more than one way - it is very likely that a more complex expression using "specific" functions will be faster.

          Another example:
          A5 will take something like "I selected the number " + 5 + " as my favorite number" and convert the 5 to a character for you but that means it will have to first find an "error" then decide how to fix it. It will run faster if you explicitly define it:
          "I selected the number " + ltrim(str(5)) + " as my favorite number"

              Re: file.copy2 extension problem

              i only needed this part and it worked perfectly.

              Code:
              fname_ext = file.filename_parse(fname,"E")
              i tried this as well but got a error when saving the code, i didnt pursue as the above worked great.

              Code:
              dim ext as C
              ext=*reverse(substr(*reverse(["UserFilename"]),1,4))
              	if ext = "jpeg" then
              	    ext = ".jpeg"
              	end if
              	if ext = "docm" then
              	   ext = ".docm"
              	end if
              	if ext = "docx" then
              	   ext = ".docx"
              	end if
              	if ext = "pptx" then
              	    ext = ".pptx"
              	end if
              	if ext = "xlsx" then
              	    ext = ".xlsx"
              	end if
              	if ext = "html" then
              	    ext = ".html"
              	end if
              i only run this one record at a time so i think stans solution is the one to run with.

              thanks everyone.
