Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dynamic Sizing of Browse

I'm sure I've seen a thread somewhere on this subject, but I'm blowed if I can find it now.

What is the easiest/best method of Sizing a Browse based on the number of records in it?

    Application.
I have a Project Tracking app with multiple Projects recorded.
I am using a Browse as a navigator to the appropriate Project Data block. This is located on the right hand side of the Form.
The Browse has just 2 fixed width columns - Proj_ID and Proj_Name.

At present I have made the browse the same height as the data panel so there is a lot of white space below the last record, but it would be nice to display it at the appropriate hieght for 3 or 10 or 15 records.

    Any ideas anyone please?

PS Aplogies for the duplications. It really was not my fault as we are having network probs and I wasn't getting confirmation of posting success.

Question: What unit of measure is the row height using? Because the browse object uom seems to be in inches.

On my machine the browse dimensions are in cm. I would say that is determined by the regional settings of our respective machines.

The row height I think (and I can't remember or find where I got this) is possibly a font size value, So far I have not really needed to know. It has been suficient to know that a smaller number makes the row smaller and a bigger number makes it bigger.:)

            Hi Tim,
If it is font related then it would be in points, no? I tried the old example and the only problem was that when the calc was based on 12 records the empty footer section of the browse grew in proportion - way more than a mere .25 inch. So I was trying to figure out how to stablize that and didn't come up with anything too consistent. Twips, points, pixels, centimeters, inches - how's a girl to know?

Different sizing question, if I may ?!?!
In a desktop application using V9, a child brwse table
on display shrinks to the point where it cannot be read. If It starts as legible and the form is closed and reopened. The horizontal lines shrink. After opening about six or seven times, the horizontal lines have merged into a wide gray area.
In the view mode the lines can be opened to display the data.
Out of more than a dozen sets with child browses, only 2 perform this way.

Does anyone know what is happening ???

I think we are going to need a picture to see what you mean.

                  MO:

Thank you for replying. I am not sure how to send a picture. I will attempt to explain better, hoping a more precise explanation will suffice.

In a set displaying on the screen, horizontal lines between rows of data are
probably set at a default value based on size of font at the time of designing the form. I use font 10 bold for most data displayed in child records of a set.

For two particular forms only, when either form is closed and later re-opened, the horizontal lines may be slightly closer that they were at the last viewing.
On closing and re-opening again, the distance shrinks a little more, cutting the data in half.

After several more re-openings of this form, the horizontal lines are touching and all that is visible in the child table is a long grayish line.

Unfortunately, we started with V8 with 5 run times. when the need occurred to expand, V8 was no longer available and we acquired a V9 developer license with additional V9 run-times.

I am guessing that this mixture of run times and licenses may be at the root of the problem.

It is only at this location that distances between horizontal lines in a child table continue to shrink.

                  Any thoughts?

Only one since I have never seen this happen. Have you tried in design mode on the form, going into object properties for the browse(s) and setting the row height to a fixed size like say 15?

Also is the font you have specified in the browse available on all the machines using the app? It may be reverting to some generic font if not.

Robin, unable to find row height, except for title font. Tried the help also,

I don't think run times can change the row hgt?, except in the view mode!
I appreciate your attempts to help.

                        John,
When you change the Row Height, you do it in design mode and after that, in View mode, the user can increase or decrease the depth of the Rows. They can also split the browse if you let them to give an Excel type appearance.

The COLUMN Properties are found by Highlighting the Column in the Browse, Right Click, Properties and you can set the column Width here. Suggest you check out the settings and re-save them and the browse. Possibly a Format Style issue between versions.

Worse case, recreate/replicate the Browse in V9 and see what happens.

To send a picture, do a screen shot, put it into Word, save and go to Manage Attachments below the Post window -Additional Options. Upload it with your post.

From the View menu in form design look for the Object explorer near the bottom.

As John requires this in a runtime environment he will have to do any alterations when in development design mode....and if this is a bug, then a possible work-around would be to set the row height as Robin and Ted suggest with code and maybe put it in the OnActivate, OnInit, or wherever to see if that helps.
